University of Rochester softball kept its unblemished home record alive, sweeping the Ithaca College Bombers in a Liberty League doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Southside Field. The 'Jackets shut out the Bombers in game one, 3-0, and topped Ithaca in game two, 4-3 to move to 25-7 (10-2 LL) on the year, while the Bombers fall to 21-12 (5-5 LL) with the doubleheader sweep.
GAME ONE:
Rochester 3, Ithaca 0
After
Molly Broccolo worked around a one-out base runner in the top of the first,
Riley Laygo gave Rochester the lead with one swing in the bat in the bottom of the frame. The first year led off the bottom of the first and launched Anna Cornell's 1-1 offering over the left-field fence for a solo home run, giving UR a 1-0 lead it'd never relinquish.
The Bombers looked to respond in the top of the second inning, putting two on with two out on a pair of singles, but Broccolo again worked out of the jam, getting Ava Rao to ground out to second to keep Ithaca scoreless.
And after Broccolo settled in and worked a 1-2-3 frame in the top of the third,
Savannah Nowak would double UR's lead in the bottom of the third. Nowak reached and took second on a two-base error by the Bombers, stole third and came around to score on a wild pitch, making it 2-0 in favor of the 'Jackets.
UR then took advantage of another Bomber fielding error to tack on another run in the fourth, with a leadoff walk and fielding error putting runners at the corners with just one out.
Hunter Gilbreath lined out to short for the second out of the inning, but
Molly Mason beat out an infield single to allow
Maithili Shah to come home and score, giving Rochester a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, the Bombers put together their best scoring opportunity against Broccolo, loading the bases with just one out on a pair of singles and Sela Scheinman's seven-pitch walk. But Broccolo turned two on Jessie Lopez's grounder right back up the middle, turning a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed.
Ithaca again threatened in the top of the sixth, putting a pair of base runners on with one out, but once again, Broccolo stranded the pair, getting a flyout and a groundout to keep the Bombers off the scoreboard.
And after UR went in order in the bottom of the sixth, Broccolo finished off the win, working around a leadoff single by Rao in the seventh to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 victory.
Broccolo (10-5) earned the win, scattering seven hits over a complete-game shutout, walking one and striking out another. Cornell (11-6) took the loss for Ithaca, allowing three runs, just one of which was earned, on four hits over 6.0 innings pitched.
Laygo led UR at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, run scored and RBI, while Mason went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
GAME TWO: Rochester 4, Ithaca 3
After leading the entirety of game one, the Yellowjackets would play from behind for the first time all day as Ithaca struck first in the top of the first inning. With one out, Lopez singled to left and stole second before Haley Petrucci brought her home with an RBI double, giving Ithaca a 1-0 lead.
Lauren Keys retired Sydney Miranda to hold Ithaca to just a run, and while UR went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, they'd answer quickly in the bottom of the second. Keys got the inning going at the plate as well, beating out an infield single to the pitcher, where she was pinch-ran for by Shah. Shah took second on a wild pitch and stole third, and after Gilbreath walked and stole second,
Molly Mason brought both runners home with a two-run single, giving Rochester a 2-1 lead.
Keys then worked around a leadoff, infield single by Scheinman, getting three-straight popouts to send UR back to the plate, where they tacked on another to make it 3-1.
A pair of hit-by-pitches and a double steal put runners at second and third, and while Laygo was caught trying to steal home,
Hannah Keiper drew a one-out walk to put runners at the corners for Keys, who brought home another run with an RBI groundout.
Rochester added another in the bottom of the fourth on
Loren Castilloux's RBI double, scoring
Katelyn Wade from second after the first-year's leadoff single, while Keys continued to work out of trouble in the circle, stranding Bomber baserunners in both the fourth and fifth innings.
In the top of the sixth, Ithaca looked to counter with a pair of singles, putting two in scoring position after a UR fielding error, prompting Rochester to make a call to the bullpen.
Maddie White relieved Keys, and while Hudson Hassler cut UR's lead to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly, White escaped without any more damage on Olivia Comolli's flyout to right, as
Bailey Nicholoff threw out Sydney Miranda trying to score from third to keep UR's lead at 4-2.
Then in the top of the seventh, White worked around a two-out homer by Scheinman, getting Lopez to groundout to nail down the save, her fourth of the year, and finish off the 4-3 victory and doubleheader sweep.
Keys (12-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs, just one earned, on eight hits, striking out four over 5.0 innings pitched. White (4) allowed one run on one hit over 2.0 innings of relief to earn the save.
Ainsley Rogers (1-3) took the loss for Ithaca, allowing three runs on two hits, while Mady Rowell pitched three innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits.
Mason went 1-for-2 with two RBI to lead Rochester at the plate, while Castilloux went 1-for-1 with a double and RBI. As a team, the 'Jackets tallied five stolen bases and drew two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
Rochester next hits the road for the final time this season, traveling to Buffalo, NY for a non-conference matchup against Buffalo State on Tuesday, April 30 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
