OSWEGO, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team dropped its non-conference regular season finale on Tuesday evening, losing to Oswego State by a 6-2 score at Laker Baseball Field.
Oswego (18-12) got the bulk of its runs on two swings, with C.J. McCarthy and Jacob Levin clubbing home runs, with McCarthy driving in three and Levin blasting a two-run bomb.
The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 17-15 on the season, with first-year
Jack Subramanian picking up his first pitching decision of the year, falling to 0-1 in what was his first collegiate start.
In the first inning, Oswego was able to get four runs across to build the early lead, all coming with two outs. Owen Parliament doubled in a run, and two batters later McCarthy blasted a home run after an unfortunate Yellowjackets foul pop-up error kept his at-bat alive, making the score 4-0.
Rochester answered back in the second with a run on a
Nathan Carpenter-Holmes double to left, scoring
Luke Gregory who reached after getting hit by a pitch.
UR threatened in the fifth, getting three singles in the frame, but was unable to cut into the deficit.
Oswego increased its lead in the sixth, again scoring both its runs with two outs thanks to Levin's home run.
The next inning, Rochester again was able to respond, but only mustered a single tally with
Dylan Stezzi slapping a single through the right side to plate
Quincy Jaksch.
In the eighth, the Yellowjackets again put runners on base with
Sammy Besztery and
Henry Jamieson reaching on singles, but neither were able to come across and score.
Overall, Rochester combined to outhit the Lakers 12-5, but 11 of the 12 base hits were singles for the Yellowjackets.
Jackson Reed,
Alec Ellison, Stezzi, Carpenter-Holmes and Jamieson all finished with two hits.
On the mound, Subramanian went three innings and allowed 3 hits, 4 runs (1 earned) and 2 walks while striking out 3.
Justin Grossman tossed four innings in relief and surrendered 2 runs, 2 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts.
Josh Leadem finished out the game with a scoreless inning.
Rochester is back in action this coming weekend, hosting Skidmore College in the Liberty League Crossover Series at Towers Field. The best-of-3 series will decide one of the four qualifying teams into next weeks Liberty League Tournament.
