UR Edges John Carroll in Weekend Finale, 5-4

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH – University of Rochester women's tennis wrapped up its two-game stint in Cleveland, OH with a 5-4 win over the John Carroll University Blue Streaks on Sunday afternoon at the Short Family Tennis Center.
 
After JCU took the first point, winning at No. 2 doubles, the Yellowjackets took the next two, and went up 2-1 on the Blue Streaks after doubles play. JCU's Felicity Kolb and Sarah Sgambati defeated Neha Dania and Sahithi Mathukumilli, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles to win the opening point, but Jaclyn Dron and Jasmin Toor quickly tied things up in the third doubles match, before UR jumped ahead at No. 1 doubles.
 
Dron and Toor topped Caroline Chandler and Kayley Gimbel at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, while Josephine Libby and Sanjana Karnam took the tiebreaker over Madeline Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren at No. 1 doubles, 8-7 (8-6), putting UR up 2-1.
 
In singles action, Toor earned the first win, topping Sgambati at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4, to give Rochester a 3-1 advantage.
 
Each of the other first three singles matches went to a third set, and Libby at the one spot would finish first, topping Kavenagh at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, to put Rochester within striking distance of a win.
 
Karman then clinched the match for UR, taking the third set at No. 2 singles, 6-3, after the first two sets went 6-3, 4-6. Karnam's win put the 'Jackets up 5-1 and clinched the victory, while the Blue Streaks would take each of the last three singles matches to pull within a point on the final scoreboard.
 
Felicity Kolb topped Dania at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 1-10, while Dron fell to Kayley Gimbel at the five spot, 4-6, 7-5, 3-10. Mathukumilli and Chandler then wrapped things up for both sides at No. 6 singles, with Chandler coming out on top, 5-7, 6-3, 10-6.
 
With the win, Rochester moves to 4-8 on the season, while John Carroll falls back to .500 at 6-6 on the year.
 
UR is back in action on Friday, April 12 when they host RPI at 4:00 p.m. inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
