Rochester Finishes Strong in Sweep Over John Carroll

The University of Rochester volleyball team rallied in both sets two and three to post a 3-set sweep over John Carroll University in action at the UR Volleyball Invitational on Friday evening at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
 
Rochester (2-6) won the opening set 25-18 before needing to come-from-behind for a pair of 25-23 wins to earn the sweep. John Carroll falls to 7-2 overall in their lone match of the weekend on the River Campus.
 
The Yellowjackets close out action at their home tournament on Saturday with two matches, playing against SUNY Brockport at 11 am before taking on SUNY Geneseo at 1 pm. Overall, six teams made the trek to the Goergen Athletic Center for the weekend event.
 
On Friday, both Rochester and John Carroll traded points early in the first set, with JCU sitting up 8-7 following a pair of UR attack errors. Rochester rattled of four of the next five points to edge in front 11-9, with Caroline Hoag and Myla Nover-Estes putting UR up two.
 
JCU battled back to tie the set at 12-all, before two attack errors and a Lydia Weeks ace built the 'Jacket lead to three at 15-12.
 
UR closed the opening set strong, winning eight of the last nine points to post the 25-18 win. A combined block from Nover-Estes and Hoag gave UR a set point and Hoag finished off the win with a strong swing for a kill.
 
In set two, the teams again were evenly matched through the opening half of the set. With the score tied at 12, John Carroll won six of the next eight points to go in front 18-14 after a kill from Tess Humphrey.
 
The Yellowjackets answered with a 6-point spurt of their own to grab a two-point lead. Rylee Bergeron had two kills in the run along with single points from Ashley Cook and Alexia Nelms.
 
The Blue Streaks answered with their own run, scoring five-in-a-row for a 23-20 lead, but kills from Bergeron and Cook sandwiched around a JCU attack error and the set was tied at 23-all.
 
Bergeron provided a service ace and then Cook finished off the set with a kill to put UR up two sets to none.
 
The third set saw John Carroll surge in front early, leading 9-4 after 13 points.
 
Rochester used a 5-point run, aided by kills from Paige Stephenson, Nelms and Cook to tie the set.
 
John Carroll nudged in front later by a 16-13 score, but Rochester stayed within striking distance thanks to a few Blue Streak errors and kills from Bergeron and Cook.
 
Trailing by two, Cook got a kill, JCU recorded an error and an ace from Nelms allowed Rochester to go up 20-19.
 
Similar to the second set, John Carroll used a late run to get within two points of the set, leading 23-20 after Hailey Williams provided a kill.
 
Rochester rallied again though, scoring the final five points of the set to squeeze out the victory in three.
 
Nover-Estes started the final run with a kill, followed by a point from a Bergeron swing. Cook provided one of the teams seven aces on the night to make the score 23-all.
 
Bergeron added her match-high 16th kill to give UR a match point, that was earned when John Carroll committed an attack error.
 
For Rochester, Bergeron smacked 16 kills on 41 attempts, hitting .220 for the night. She added 13 digs. Cook hit a whopping .409 with a 10-1-22 attack line. Nover-Estes also had ten kills on the night.
 
Hoag finished with seven kills and three blocks, while Nelms dished out 35 assists and picked up nine digs. Weeks had 16 digs, while Katie Westerheim chipped in 11. Ruby Moore led UR with three aces.
 
JCU's Williams led the Blue Streaks with nine kills on a team-high 25 attempts. Abby Bednar added seven while Olivia Mogyordy added 12 digs.
