Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ari Ross, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

8th-ranked ‘Jackets Cruise to 6-0 Victory over Buffalo St.

BUFFALO, NY – No. 8 University of Rochester women's soccer scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and five in the first half, rolling to a 6-0, shutout victory over the Buffalo State University Bengals on Saturday evening at Coyer Field.

The Yellowjackets earned a corner a minute into the contest, firing their opening salvo at Buffalo St. keeper Addy Williams with a pair of shots wide from Natalie Kocsis and Natalie Santangelo.

Rochester then got on the scoreboard just minutes later, as a mis-headed free-kick made its way to Sydney Holmes inside the box and the sophomore notched her second goal of the year with a left-footed shot past a diving Williams, assisted by Remi Cherkas.

Just past the nine-minute mark, Natalie Kocsis made it 2-0 off an assist from Cece Vassallo, and the route was on.

After her first two shots were saved and blocked, Claire Grover then got in the scoring off an assist from Kocsis. Kocsis made her run down the right side, dribbling through the Bengals' defense before finding Grover, who flicked the ball into the back of the net to give UR a 3-0 lead.

Rochester would add two more scores in the first half, both off the foot of Jordyn Kowalkowski. The senior converted a 27th-minute penalty kick to make it 4-0 and nearly added another less than a minute later with a shot that forced a save from Williams.

In the 44th minute though, Kowalkowski would indeed find the back of the net once again, looping a tremendous ball from about 25-yards out into the upper-left of the back of the net and out of the reach of Williams for another score.

In total, Rochester outshot Buffalo State, 15-1 in the first half, scored five goals and forced another six saves. And the Yellowjackets kept the pressure on throughout the second, scoring early before cruising to victory.

Taylor Clisson, who replaced Addy Williams at the half, saved early shots from Santangelo and Eileen Harvey before Holmes found the back of the net once again, this time off a pass from Santangelo in from the right side.

Holmes' score, her second of the night, made it a 6-0 lead, and while UR wouldn't find the back of the net the rest of the way, it wouldn't matter as Rochester finished off the shutout victory with seven more shots in the second period, as well as three saves from Marla Radikas and Kennedy Stark.

With the win, the 8th-ranked Yellowjackets move to 4-0-1 on the year, while Buffalo State falls to 2-4.

Kowalkowski led UR with two goals and five shots, while Holmes notched her two scores on just two shots. Kocsis added a goal and an assist, while Grover and Santangelo each took three shots, with Grover netting a score.

Grace Kuropatkin earned the win in 45 minutes in goal, while Radikas replaced her for 33 minutes in the second and made two saves, and Stark made a stop in her 11:28 of action.

Rochester next makes the short trip to Pittsford, NY for a matchup at St. John Fisher University on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
