PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – No. 7 University of Rochester women's soccer suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday night, as William Smith College took a 3-1 victory over the Yellowjackets at Fauver Stadium on Saturday evening.
Natalie Santangelo had the first shot attempt of the game off the cross from the wing, but the shot missed high. Three minutes later, Santangelo had another opportunity, but a sliding save by the William Smith keeper took the opportunity away.
The Herons were the first team to put a goal on the board after a defensive breakdown left goalie
Grace Kuropatkin with a 2v1 against two Heron Attackers. This goal put William Smith up 1-0 with 19:08 left in the first half.
Then with 18:02 left in the first half, the Herons put another goal on the board after a 30-yard shot snuck just over Kuropatkin's glove to give William Smith a 2-0 lead.
Rochester's next opportunity to put a goal on the board came off a great pass from
Remi Cherkas to
Syd Coggins, but it was saved by the keeper and then rebounded out by
Alyssa Doody. Doody's first shot was saved by the Herons' defense, while her second missed just wide left.
In the 50th minute, a Rochester player received their second yellow card of the match, forcing UR to finish the game one person down.
Despite being one player down, 10 minutes into the second half, Rochester scored their first goal of the game when Santangelo received an unassisted opportunity from 15 yards out to get UR within one.
However, despite keeping the pressure on for much of the second, a late breakaway gave the Herons a 3-1 lead in the 87th minute, clinching their 3-1 victory.
With the loss, Rochester falls to 5-1-1 on the year, while William Smith moves to 4-2-1.
Despite the loss, the Yellowjackets won the shots battle, 11-8 and had three corner attempts to William Smith's one.
Santangelo led the offensive attack for the Yellowjackets with seven shots.
The 'Jackets will look to bounce back on Wednesday, September 25 when they face SUNY Geneseo at 4:00 p.m. in Geneseo, NY.
