Trio of Goal Scorers Lead Men’s Soccer Past Geneseo, 3-1

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester men's soccer earned another multi-goal win, defeating the SUNY Geneseo Knights, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium. With the win, the 'Jackets move to 5-1-2 on the year, while the Knights drop to 2-2-3.

After the Knights held much of the early possession, forcing an early save by Santino Lupica-Tondo in the sixth minute and nearly taking the lead on Vasion Sinjari's shot that just sailed high at the 8:25 mark, UR's offense put the pressure on Geneseo's defense and just over 19 minutes into the contest, took the lead.

A good ball up the wing made its way to Kamal Ibrahim, but the graduate forward's shot sailed to the left of goal. Rochester would then earn two corners of the next five minutes before Ibrahim had another shot blocked off UR's second corner, while Milos Bisenic's 19th-minute attempt went wide.

Just over a minute later though, the 'Jackets broke through on a terrific ball from Daniel Steinacher. The sophomore center back's long pass found Ibrahim ahead of the defense, and the graduate student settled and fired a strike past a diving Vincent Maronski to give UR a 1-0 lead.

While its defense held Geneseo to just one more shot the rest of the first half, Rochester had several more opportunities down the stretch in the first. EliJose Araujo saw his 38th-minute shot blocked, while Juan Lucena Fois had one blocked and then forced a save by Maronski just shy of the 40-minute mark.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Knights, 9-3, in the first half, and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room, and would add to it just over 13 minutes into the second half.

First though, the Knights looked to find the equalizer, with two shots over the first six minutes of play in the second half that the UR defense blocked.

Tyler Moran then forced another save, this one by Max Crothall, who replaced Maronski at the break, before Nick Swanger's 58th-minute attempt went just wide-right of the mark.

On Swanger's attempt though, the Yellowjackets earned a free kick, while Bisenic put in the back of the net for his first-career score. UR's sophomore midfielder got Crothall to lean ever so slightly left, and Geneseo's keeper wasn't able to get enough of the ball to stop Bisenic from buying the 25-yard free kick into the lower-left corner of the net.

And up 2-0, Rochester quickly added another score, with Ryan Szymczyk and Jeremiah Anandarajah combining to find Alessio Cristanetti-Walker. After the Knights cleared UR's 63rd-minute corner, Szymczyk settled it and rolled it back into the back. Anandarajah passed it toward Cristanetti-Walker with a tremendous heel flick, and the sophomore slid it past Crothall for another goal.

Rochester then nearly made it 4-0 on a corner kick in the 69th minute, but Crothall saved Anandarajah's header, knocking it over the ball to keep it a three-goal lead.

Crothall later saved another shot from Lucena Fois in the 71st minute, before an offsides call took away another goal-scoring opportunity for UR.

Despite that though, the 'Jackets remained up by three till the waning moments of the second half.

Over the final 10 minutes of play, Geneseo pushed forward looking to break the shutout and in the 88th minute, Joe Vogt would do just that. The senior headed in Evan Lodie's corner into the top-right of the net to get the Knights on the scoreboard, cutting UR's lead to just 3-1.

But the 'Jackets would hold off Geneseo from getting any closer, defending a 90th-minute corner, and Aidan Lodie's shot at the 89:58 mark, which went wide, to seal UR's 3-1 victory.

Offensively, Ibrahim tallied four shots and a goal, while Lucena Fois had three shots. Bisenic and Cristanetti-Walker notched Rochester's two other scores, with Anandarajah, Steinacher and Szymczyk tallying the three assists.

In goal, Lupica-Tondo allowed one goal and made one save, facing nine shots, just two of which were on goal. Rochester outshot Geneseo, 16-9, and had eight corners, compared to four for the visitors.

The Yellowjackets next hit the road for one final time during non-conference play, making the trip down to Hoboken, NJ for a matchup against Stevens on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1:00 p.m.
