PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester men's soccer picked up its first result of the 2024 campaign, playing the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles to a scoreless draw on Tuesday evening inside Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Both teams got off to a bit of a slow start, with just one shot in the first 20 minutes. In the 23rd minute, Brockport notched their first shot on goal, a shot by Max Voyer off a throw-in, but
Santino Lupica-Tondo made a diving save, his first of four on the night.
Following two more shots by the Golden Eagles that were blocked and sailed wide, UR sent its first shot toward goal in the 36th minute, a
Pasquale Carusone header off
Kol Bassuk's throw-in that went wide of the mark.
The Yellowjackets and Golden Eagles would head into halftime still knotted in a scoreless draw, but not before Brockport had two more chances near the end of the first half.
A shot from Peter Tinaj went across the goal but was high and wide to the right, while Russ Domm forced another save with a long-range volley just shy of the 41:30 mark.
In the second half though, UR picked things up offensively, outshooting the Golden Eagles, 9-4, after being outshot, 7-1 in the first.
The Yellowjackets earned their first corner kick of the night just over a minute into the second period, while
Kamal Ibrahim forced the first of three saves by Andrew Taylor with a header off Bassuk's throw-in just minutes later.
In the 62nd minute,
Mikey Burke and
Nick Swanger forced two more Taylor saves, with Taylor pushing Swanger's long-range, left-footed volley just high of the mark. Then after a 63rd-minute corner kick, the 'Jackets got potentially their best chance of the night, as Ibrahim's shot was kept out of the goal by Giovanni Cardona.
And while that'd end up being Rochester's last shot on goal of the evening, the 'Jackets kept the pressure on Taylor and the Golden Eagles' defense, with five more shots blocked or sailing just wide down the stretch.
Ibrahim had another blocked in the 68th minute, while Taylor Moran's acrobatic attempt in the 71st minute went just a little wide and high to the left.
In the 79th minute, Lupica-Tondo notched his final save of the night, keeping Tinaj's shot out of goal before the two sides closed out the second half with a scoreless draw to each take home a result.
With the draw, Rochester moves to 0-1-1 on the season, while Brockport now sits at 1-0-1.
Ibrahim led UR with three shots, two of which were on goal, while Swanger took two shots, including one on goal. For Brockport, Tinaj and Voyer each took three shots, as the Golden Eagles outshot UR for the contest, 11-10.
In goal, Lupica-Tondo made four saves for UR, while Taylor made three for Brockport.
Rochester next wraps up its two-game homestand with a matchup against Alvernia University on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
