GAMBIER, OH – The University of Rochester got off to a quick start, scoring twice in the first quarter and added single tallies in the other three periods to power past host Kenyon College 5-1 in non-conference field hockey action at the Field at Benson Bowl on Sunday.
Overall in the game, Rochester (4-0) dominated on the stat sheet, outshooting the Owls (2-1) 46-4, including holding a 25-0 advantage at halftime.
In the opening quarter,
Maya Ullrich got the scoring started in the fifth minute, tapping in a rebound of a
Grayson Honig shot.
Later in the period, Honig got her own score, stuffing in a rebound to keep her strong start to the 2024 campaign going. The sophomore attack already has six goals through four games this season.
With under four minutes to go in the opening half, Rochester's
Sofia LaFalce notched the first goal of her career, boosting the score to 3-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets.
After halftime, an early penalty corner led to the 'Jackets boosting the lead to four.
Mara Heppard inserted the ball and first-year
Kristina Fedorova found the cage for her first collegiate goal.
Two minutes later, Kenyon broke the shutout and capitalized on its first penalty corner and shot attempt of the contest. Raigan Hutter took the corner and found Grace Lane who slipped the ball past
Kara Houston in the Rochester goal to make the score 4-1.
The UR offensive onslaught continued into the fourth quarter, with Kenyon keeper Megan Lydon consistently denying the Yellowjackets additional scores, including making five saves in the 49th minute alone.
Rochester first-year
Hannah Mehta completed the games scoring with a goal a minute later, recording her third score of the year. Mehta finished with 12 shot attempts (6 on goal), finishing one behind Honig for the game-high.
In the cages, Houston earned her fourth win of the season while making two saves, with Lydon piling up 29 stops for the Owls.
Rochester's remains on the road for its next two games in the coming week, playing at Hamilton College on Wednesday before playing at Marywood University on Saturday.
