WALTHAM, MA – Brandeis University entered Friday nights matchup with the University of Rochester ranked first in Division III in 3-point shooting, and showed why that was, draining 15 triples in an 84-54 University Athletic Association victory at Red Auerbach Arena.
The Judges (10-3, 1-1 UAA) ended up making over 45% from distance, hitting 15-of-33 attempts from behind the arc in its victory, scoring the third most points ever in a matchup with the Yellowjackets (6-7, 0-2 UAA).
Rochester meanwhile was hindered from the floor on Friday, making just 27% (21-79) overall and 18% (5-28) from long range.
After
David Ackles opened the scoring for UR, Brandeis rattled off eight straight points, including back-to-back triples from Elias Rodl and Sam Adusei to take the lead for good.
Logan Jadogzinski added a layup to make the score 8-4, but Brandeis answered with six more points in a row, aided by a Jake Bender 3-pointer to build its lead to double-digits after just six minutes.
The Yellowjackets continued to struggle from the floor over the next four minutes, allowing the Judges to keep expanding the lead with an 11-2 run.
Late in the half, shots started to fall for Rochester, leading to a 15-9 spurt which cut into the Judges deficit. Jagodzinski,
Ethan McEachern and
Corvin Oprea scored 3-pointers in the stretch for Rochester, but those were countered by shots from distance by Brandeis' Bender and two by Toby Harris.
At intermission, the host Judges had built a 24-point cushion, leading 51-27.
During the second half, Brandeis scored eight of the opening ten points to stretch the margin, allowing the hosts to cruise to the victory, its largest in the 74 all-time meetings between the schools.
Despite the loss, Rochester still holds a 53-21 lead in the series against Brandeis.
Jagodzinski led the Yellowjackets with 13 points on the evening.
Theo Murray had 8 points off the bench while
Bernard Dushie Jr. had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
Brandeis' leading scorers were Harris and Rodl who each finished with a game-high 20 points. Both players sank four 3-pointers. Bender added nine points with Aedan Using chipping in eight points and five rebounds.
UR's early slate in the UAA conference continues on Sunday afternoon at 4th-ranked NYU, with tipoff set for 2 pm.
