Rochester, NYU Finish Ranked Battle Tied 1-1

NEWARK, NJ – The University of Rochester women's soccer team played its fifth nationally-ranked opponent in the last seven matches, coming away with another result, tying 1-1 with #25 New York University on Saturday evening at Lubetkin Field on the campus of NJIT.

In those ranked matchups, #22 Rochester (6-1-5, 0-1-1 UAA) has come away with one win and three draws, only falling to fourth-ranked CWRU last Saturday in the UAA opener. The tie moves NYU to 8-2-3 overall on the season and 0-1-1 in the UAA.

After a scoreless first half, a turnover by the Yellowjackets in the midfield led to a transition goal by NYU to take the lead. The ball eventually made its way to Hunter Hoelscher who slipped a pass up to goal-scorer Marlee Scanlon.

Scanlon settled the pass, made one cut back to her left and curled a left-footed shot from one step in from the 18 just inside the left post. The ball deflected down and into the net, ending up just beyond the outstretched arms of Yellowjacket keeper Sydney Moore.

Later in the half, the Yellowjackets were awarded a penalty kick following an NYU handball on a blocked shot by Claire Baim, but NYU keeper, Mia Capo, made a huge save on the PK, denying Addi Verdon to keep the Violets in front.

URochester's equalizer came with just over five minutes left in the contest. A long pass up the field came from Eileen Harvey along the 'Jacket back line, finding Natalie Santangelo along the left side. Santangelo found some space and sent a service into the box where first-year Jane Mueller slotted a 10-yard left foot shot inside the far post for a goal. Mueller's score was her second of the season.

Over the final five minutes, neither team was able to generate any shot attempts, leading to the draw and each team's first point of the UAA conference season.

Statistically, both teams were even throughout the match, with Rochester holding a slim edge in shots (11-9) and corner kicks (4-3). For the game, Moore finished with five saves for Rochester, while Capo in the Violet net also ended with five stops.

Up next, the Yellowjacket return home and play host to UAA opponent Brandeis University next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Fauver Stadium.
