2nd-Ranked Bears Power Past Yellowjackets

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears turned in a dominant effort en route to a 5-0, shutout victory over the University of Rochester women's soccer on Friday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Coming into Friday evening's University Athletic Association (UAA) matchup, the Bears, the reigning UAA and NCAA Division III Champions, hadn't dropped a regular-season contest since Oct. 29, 2023, when then-10th-ranked URochester upset the top-ranked Bears, 2-1, at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis, MO.

Since that matchup, WashU has gone 39-1-4, and the Bears looked the part on Friday night, moving to 14-0-1 (4-0 UAA) with the win, while the 16th-ranked 'Jackets dropped to 7-2-5 (1-2-1 UAA) with the loss.

WashU outshot Rochester, 16-7, and put five of their nine shots on goal into the back of the net. 2024-25 UAA Player of the Year Olivia Clemons notched a hat trick with three goals, upping her UAA-leading total to 13, while Ella Koleno and Cami Colpitts each added a score, notching the Bears' first and second goals of the contest.

Sydney Moore notched an early save on a long-distance attempt from Madison Foley in the 19th minute, while the Yellowjacket defense blocked a pair of shots and defended a trio of corners over the first 20 minutes of the contest.

Just shy of the 24-minute mark, though, Koleno got the Bears on the scoreboard, as a header from Kate Martin found Koleno up ahead in the box for a goal.

Moore added two more saves over the next 10 minutes, stopping Sophie Viscovich's volley from the top of the box in the 26th minute, as well as a flick from Martin off another WashU corner in the 30th minute.

Remi Cherkas notched the Yellowjackets' first shot on a free kick in the 35th minute, flicking a header wide, before the Bears found the back of the net again to double, and then triple, their lead.

Colpitts's right-footed shot from the left wing made it 2-0 Bears in the 36th minute, and a little over a minute later, Clemons made it 3-0 on a long pass from Martin on the counterattack.

The Yellowjackets headed into halftime down three scores, and Clemons would add two more goals in the second half to notch a hat trick and put the Bears up five.

Despite the deficit, URochester created several opportunities in the second half, with a shot from Delia McMullen sailing wide just past the 74-minute mark, while Suzie Green made a leaping save off a shot from distance from Natalie Santagelo in the 78th minute, resulting in a Yellowjacket corner.

On the set piece, the Yellowjackets earned a penalty kick on a handball on Eileen Harvey's shot, but Green made a pair of saves on Santangelo's PK, keeping the shutout for the Bears.

Santangelo led Rochester offensively with three shots, while Moore made five saves in goal.

For WashU, Kassidy Lanthier earned the win with 70:55 in goal, while Green made three saves in her 19+ minutes between the pipes.

The Yellowjackets will look to bounce back when they wrap up the weekend against No. 3 UChicago on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
