Men’s Soccer Drops Weekend Finale vs. #12 Chicago

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Coming off a top-five upset of No. 3 WashU on Friday, the University of Rochester men's soccer couldn't keep the momentum going as they fell to the 12th-ranked University of Chicago Maroons, 2-0, on Sunday morning at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Maroons threatened early against the Yellowjackets, earning a pair of corner kicks over the first 20 minutes of action. Kai Walsh notched UChicago's first shot in the sixth minute, sailing his attempt high, while Ricky Kai's volley off Chicago's 21st-minute corner was well left of the mark.

Seven minutes later, the Maroons earned another pair of corners and nearly found the back of the net on the second, but Louis Bock saw his shot stopped by Daniel Steinacher, while a foul negated Chicago's ensuing score on the rebound.

Over the next several minutes, Rochester's offense began to settle in, and in the 31st minute, Kamal Ibrahim drew a foul just outside the box, setting up a scoring opportunity.

Milos Bisenic took the free kick for URochester and nearly put it in the back of the net, with Chicago's Ali Alamery just getting enough of Bisenic's low, whipping shot to keep it out of goal, while Ibrahim sent the rebound just wide for a goal kick.

Then less than a minute later, Bisenic found himself with a ball out in front of the net, but his first attempt was blocked by a defender, while Alamery again knocked the junior's second shot away.

UChicago wasn't able to fully clear things, and Sebastian Ballesteros sent in a left-footed shot, but it deflected wide.

Down the stretch of the first half, Chicago sent another shot wide off a 32nd-minute corner, while Ben Ziegler notched his first save on a long-distance attempt by Chase Perry.

And while it looked like the teams would go into the locker room without a goal between them, the Maroons had other plans.

With less than a minute left, the Maroons found some space down the left wing, and Max Weene settled a pass from Samuel Jimenez and one-timed it into the far, lower-right corner of the net to give Chicago a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets came out of the locker room and put the pressure on Chicago, looking for an early equalizer. Bisenic sailed a 49th-minute free kick wide, while Kol Bassuk and Will Fallona had early second-half tries blocked, resulting in another corner.

On the ensuing corner, Bassuk's header sailed wide, and the Maroons took things the other way.

Ziegler notched his first save of the second half on Alex Gomas' shot from the far post just past the 53-minute mark, and then notched another in the 61st minute on a long-range boot from Jadyn Hsieh-Bailey.

Following another save on an attempt by Evan Kanellos in the 64th minute, the Yellowjackets had their best attempt of the second half, with Ashton Prescott crossing in a pass to Bisenic, but the junior couldn't quite get his header on target.

Rochester then earned a corner in the 70th minute, but couldn't put a shot on net, and on the counterattack, the Maroons took things the other way, forcing Ziegler to come out and make a save on David Schuster.

The Maroons, though, would again break through in the 77th minute, with Kai's one-touch goal pulling the game out of reach. A foul to the left of the box gave Chicago a dangerous free kick, and the Maroons took advantage with Max Weene's free kick finding Kai's foot for the score.

Chicago would hold Rochester to just one shot the rest of the way, while the Maroons put another shot on goal in the 87th minute, netting Ziegler another save, before the final whistle sounded.

With the loss, Rochester drops to 8-4-4 (2-2-1 UAA) on the year, while No. 12 Chicago moves to 10-1-5 (3-0-2 UAA) with the win.

Bisenic led Rochester with five shots, putting two on goal, while Ziegler made six saves in net.

The Yellowjackets next hit the road for one final time in conference play, traveling to Pittsburgh, PA for a matchup against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11:00 a.m.
