Rochester Closes Regular Season with 2 OT Loss at William Smith

GENEVA, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team fell in its season finale, dropping a 1-0 decision to Liberty League rival William Smith College on Wednesday evening at McCooey Field.

William Smith's Ada Dios Vidal scored on the first shot of the second overtime, sprinting in from the right sideline before chipping a ball from five yards over Rochester goalkeeper Kara Houston's stacked pads.

The win pushes William Smith's record to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, while Rochester falls to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference. By virtue of the victory, William Smith secures the #4 seed in the conference tournament and will host 5th-seeded Rochester in the play-in game on Tuesday evening, right back in Geneva.

Rochester's overtime contest was the fourth straight for the Yellowjackets to close the regular season, with two of those going to a penalty shootout competition. Overall on the year, the 'Jackets have went beyond the 60-minute regulation time a total of eight times in 19 matches.

In the opening quarter, Rochester earned the first corner of the game, just 105 seconds in. The play ended up earning the Yellowjackets the first shot of the game, but Grayson Honig's attempt from in close was saved away by Olivia Terranova in the Heron cage.

William Smith's first shot of the game came at the 6-minute mark, but Houston was able to make a strong play coming off her line to deny a shot by Abby Jones near the right post.

Late in the period, Erin Foley cracked a hard shot towards the far post from the right wing, but Terranova made another save, sticking her foot out to kick the ball away to safety.

The Herons earned a couple late corners in the first, but those were fended off by Houston and the 'Jacket defense, keeping the game scoreless.

As play shifted to the second, the both defenses took over, with only two shots being taken, one by each team over the 15 minutes. Rochester's attempt was the best look, with Emilia Parrado's 2-yard backhand near the left post being stopped by Terranova for a save.

Less than two minutes into the third quarter, William Smith's Rebecca Mantione nearly put the hosts on the board with a turnaround shot from just inside the circle that clanged off the post, with a rebound attempt by Mia Batchelder being sent wide.

Rochester was held without a shot in the third, but the Herons were also held without a goal, sending the game to the final regulation period still tied at 0-0.

Similar to the second, both teams were limited to just one shot attempt in the fourth, but both keepers made saves on those chances, sending the game to overtime.

The two extra sessions were all William Smith, with the Herons holding Rochester without a shot, while taking six attempts at goal, with Vidal's shot at 75:54 ending it.

Overall in the game, the Herons led 19-4 in shots and 9-2 in corners. Houston made ten saves in the cage for URochester, while Terranova picked up the shutout with four saves.
