‘Jackets Tie RIT in Rochester Derby Match

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – A last-minute goal scored by the visiting Rochester Institute of Technology salvaged a 1-1 draw against the University of Rochester in the Rochester derby match at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Both goals in the game were scored late, with Pasquale Carusone finding the net in the 87th minute, before Selorm Dake scoring with just 30 seconds left on the clock.

The draw moves URochester's record to 6-2-4 on the season, as the Yellowjackets remain unbeaten in their last ten matches after an 0-2 start to the year. RIT is now 4-4-3 in 2025 after the draw.

For the better part of the contest, RIT had the momentum, leading to an 18-8 advantage in the shot column. The Tigers also dominated in earning ten of the 11 total corner kicks in the contest.

Rochester keeper Ben Ziegler was terrific, finishing with a season-high eight saves, including denying the Tigers seven times in the final period.

In the scoreless opening half, UR's Ashton Prescott had the first solid chance for the home team in the 22nd minute. After a centering pass came in from the right, Will Fallona dropped a pass back to a charging Prescott who ripped a shot on goal that was saved by RIT's Kristian Bobbek.

With under five minutes on the clock in the first period, Ziegler made his first save of the contest, denying Daniel Sucato's shot from the middle of the box.

Early in the second half, RIT kept the momentum going and earned a good look off the foot of Adam Eastman, but Ziegler made the stop, diving to his right on a blast from 30 yards.

Later on, a three-minute surge by the Tigers saw Ziegler make a whopping five saves, all on terrific opportunities in close by RIT.

A one-touch shot from eight yards by Eastman was kicked away in the 58th minute. A minute later, Dake was left alone at the right post but the 'Jacket goalkeeper pushed his shot wide.

Three more saves occurred over the next two minutes following RIT corner kicks, with Tony Shin providing the best Tiger opportunity. Shin ended up unleashing a 24-yard left foot shot towards the right post, but Ziegler kept the game scoreless diving to his left.

The RIT run seemed to light a fire into the Yellowjackets, leading to several shots at the other end. Johnny Makula, Mikey Burke and Will Fallona all had attempts at the goal, but none were on frame.

With under seven minutes left, Makula was hard-charging on net and received a pinpoint slip pass up the field from Kamal Ibrahim, but a sliding shot sailed high of the open net, as Bobbek had aggressively come off his line.

Shortly after in the 87th minute, Carusone broke the tie with his third goal of the season. The play started in the UR half of the field and worked its way up to Milos Bisenic along the left sideline. Bisenic followed by sending a long ball up and across the field to a Carusone who broke in alone on goal and chipped his shot past Bobbek into the net for the 1-0 Yellowjacket lead.

Now trailing, RIT really ramped up the pressure looking for the equalizer. With just 53 seconds left in the game, a drop pass by Dake in the box left Idriss Diallo a wide open shot, but Ziegler came up with a huge save to keep his team in front.

On the ensuing corner kick though, the Tigers tied it as Dake found some space at the far post, tapping in the service from teammate Adrian Sobczak with just 30 seconds remaining.

The Yellowjackets next match is set for Saturday evening at NYU starting at 5:30 pm, with all six of URochester's remaining games on the schedule being University Athletic Association conference games.
