PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester men's basketball team continued its strong play at the annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, posting an 87-73 victory over host Nazareth University on Saturday evening at Kidera Gymnasium.
Rochester (5-0) finished the 4-team tournament with a 2-0 record for the seventh time in the nine all-time tournaments, extending its record to 15-3 in that span. Seniors
Corvin Oprea and
Tomiwa Adetosoye were named to the All-Tournament team, with Oprea being selected Most Valuable Player.
Oprea poured in 30 points on Saturday, his second 30-point output of the season, adding six rebounds. He shot 9-for-15 from the floor and made three 3-pointers. Adetosoye had a solid all-around game on Friday in a win over St. John Fisher and backed it up with a 10-point, 9-rebound, 4-assist performance against Nazareth.
Graduate student
Sam Henderson flirted with a triple-double on Saturday, ending with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in 27 minutes.
Jordan Owusu added 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists while
Justin Odibo added four assists and five rebounds. Overall, the Yellowjackets had 22 assists on 27 made baskets.
Nazareth also had four players in double-figure scoring, with Jaylen Savage finishing with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Luke Insley had 18 points, with Merritt Holly and Solomon McFarlane scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.
For 15 minutes of the opening half, the two teams remained close on the scoreboard, with Rochester leading 27-24.
The last five minutes saw Nazareth (4-2) fail to make a field goal, letting Rochester embark on a 13-2 run to pull in front by 14 points, up 40-26 at halftime. Oprea had five points in the 'Jacket run, while Odibo and Adetosoye added three points each.
After halftime, Nazareth worked hard to get back within five points, trailing 48-43 after nearly six minutes had elapsed, but Owusu hit an old-fashioned 3-point play to regain Rochester's momentum, leading to a 10-4 run over two minutes to extend the lead back to double-digits.
The Golden Flyers again responded, scoring eight of the next nine points to get back within four points with under nine minutes left, but Rochester withstood the rally.
Rochester had an 8-0 spurt and led 67-55 after
Theo Murray sank a layup, but the Golden Flyers refused to quit, rallying back once again. Tyler Putney hit a 3-pointer with 4:15 on the clock to pull Nazareth again within five, trailing 69-64.
What followed was seven straight points by Oprea, essentially putting the game away for the Yellowjackets, with the visitors sitting up 76-64 with 2:31 left.
Down the stretch, Adetosoye hit 7-of-8 free throws, finishing 8-for-10 overall in the game, to reach the winning margin of 14 points.
Rochester looks to remain unbeaten on the season in its next game, hosting Hobart College on Tuesday evening at the Palestra, with tip-off time scheduled for 7:30 pm.
