Volleyball Drops a Pair on Senior Day

University of Rochester women's volleyball fell twice in its Senior Day Tri-Match against Buffalo State University and Union College, dropping its first match of the day to the Bengals, 3-0, before falling in its regular-season finale against the Garnet Chargers, 3-1.

With the two losses, the Yellowjackets wrap up the regular season at 4-20, while Buffalo State moves to 14-15 following its loss to Union in the neutral-site matchup, and Union now sits at 22-8 after topping both the Bengals and 'Jackets.

MATCH ONE: Buffalo State 3, Rochester 0.
Rochester would play the Bengals close in all three sets, dropping both the first and third sets by a pair, 25-23, while Buffalo State took the second set, 25-19.

After Myla Nover-Estes tied things up in the opening set at 11 with a kill, three-straight Bengals' points gave Buffalo State a 14-11 lead and forced URochester to take a timeout.

The 'Jackets answered back and would take the lead on kills from Lilly Kraemer and Sancia Williams, 16-15, and held a 22-21 lead several points later after back-to-back kills from Rylee Bergeron.

But out of a Buffalo State timeout, the Bengals retook the lead, and then broke a 23-23 tie with a block and kill to take the first set, 25-23.

A 6-0 gave the Bengals the advantage midway through set two, and through Rochester clawed their way back, taking a 16-15 lead on another pair of kills from Kraemer and Nover-Estes, the Bengals answered back with another surge.

Buffalo State retook the lead with three in a row and went up 21-17 before Rochester took a timeout. Trailing 22-17, the 'Jackets pulled within three, 22-19, before the Bengals scored the last three points of the set to take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-19 set-two win.

In set three, the Yellowjackets and Bengals traded early runs, before six-straight points from Buffalo State midway through the set gave the visitors a lead they'd never relinquish.

The Bengals led 15-12 following their run and extended their lead to 20-14 over the next few points. And while Rochester nearly came all the way back, pulling within one, 24-23, on Bergeron's kill, capping off a 7-2 URochester stretch, Ella Whittman finished off the sweep for the Bengals with a kill, giving Buffalo State a 25-23 set-three win and 3-0 match victory.

Bergeron led the 'Jackets against the Bengals with 12 kills, while Nover-Estes added 10. Iliana Balaskas notched a team-high 32 assists, while Bergeron and Lydia Weeks both tallied double-digit digs with 16 and 12 digs apiece, respectively.

MATCH TWO: Union 3, Rochester 1.
While the Garnet Chargers turned in a dominant effort in the opening set, hitting .455 with 16 kills, the Yellowjackets would bounce back to take the second set, and level the match at one set apiece.

After some back-and-forth play in the opening set, Union extended its 11-10 lead to 21-12 before the 'Jackets took a timeout, ending the first set on a 14-5 extended run to go up 1-0 in the match.

Rochester, though, would respond in the second set, with five-straight points on Ellen Porter's serve early on, and then, down 19-15 late, rallied off four straight to tie the match at 19-all.

Katie Westerheim sent over a pair of aces to help knot the set at 19-all, and after Union took a timeout, the 'Jackets matched Union down the stretch, taking a timeout down 23-22.

Out of the timeout, Williams smashed a kill to make it 23-all, and then Nover-Estes and Porter combined for a block to give the 'Jackets the lead, before Porter notched another kill to take the set, 25-23.

The Garnet Chargers answered right back in the third set, though, pushing ahead with a 5-0 run up 9-6 to take a 13-6 lead on a URochester attack error.

Rochester would respond and keep the Garnet Chargers from pulling away, closing the gap to two, 15-13, and then later, 23-21, but Union netted the final two points of the set out of a timeout, taking the set, 25-21, to take a 2-0 match lead.

Union then raced out to a 9-2 lead to start the fourth set, never trailing despite a late Rochester rally, finishing off the set, 25-18, to take the match 3-1.

Down 21-12, the Yellowjackets scored five of the next six to pull within five, with blocks from Nover-Estes and Kraemer, and Isis Pribble and Kraemer contributing to UR's run, but Union notched three of the next four to finish things off.

Bergeron again led the 'Jackets offensively with 17 kills, adding nine digs, while Nover-Estes had 12 kills, six digs and three blocks. Balaskas dished out 29 assists in the four-set loss, while Weeks had a team-high 19 digs, with Balaskas adding 10.

Rochester will next head to Waltham, MA, for the 2025 University Athletic Association Volleyball Championship, hosted by Brandeis University. URochester, seeded eighth, will open the championship against the No. 1-seed University of Chicago Maroons on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 11:00 a.m.
