Men’s Hoops Edged by Bowdoin, 72-70

BRUNSWICK, ME – The University of Rochester men's basketball team nearly mounted a second-half rally for the second straight day but ultimately fell in its final game at the UAA Challenge, dropping a 72-70 decision to Bowdoin College on Sunday afternoon at Morell Gymnasium.

Rochester's record drops to 7-2 on the season, with just two non-conference games left on the schedule. Bowdoin improves to 6-3 win the victory.

The Yellowjackets late game rally came in the final three minutes, with Rochester holding Bowdoin to 1-of-6 shooting during that stretch. That defense, coupled with three 'Jacket steals allowed Rochester to go on a 13-5 run, going from down eight points to just trailing by two. Rochester's leading scorer on the game, Tomiwa Adetosoye had 11 of the 'Jacket points during the surge.

After a 1-for-2 free throw chance for the Polar Bears with 2.5 seconds left, Rochester was able to have a chance for a last-second shot to tie or win the game in regulation. A quick inbound and timeout moved the ball up near midcourt, setting up a designed play at the rim.

Down to 1.7 seconds remaining, Adetosoye found an open Sam Henderson with the inbounds pass following a screen in the paint, but Henderson's layup inside fell off the rim, allowing Bowdoin to hang on for the victory.

Adetosoye finished with a game-high 20 points, adding four rebounds and three steals. Corvin Oprea added 15 points for the 'Jackets, while tying for the team lead with six rebounds. John Mayhew also hit double-figures, scoring 12 points and securing six rebounds.

Bowdoin led by as many as 11 points in the game, leading 31-20 late in the opening half. The Yellowjackets struggled shooting in the first 20 minutes, making just 7-of-30 attempts, equaling 23%, leading to the deficit.

After that point though, the 'Jackets scored ten straight points spanning the final seconds of the opening half and first minute of the second period. Mayhew scored five of the ten points, while Jordan Owusu hit three free throws and Oprea added a pair from the line.

Over the next several minutes, the two teams stayed within a few points of one another, with the score sitting tied at 45-all with 10:19 remaining.

Over the next two and a half minutes, Bowdoin used an 8-2 run to gain some separation on the scoreboard. Oprea drained a three to cut the lead back down to three, but the Polar Bears answered by scoring seven of the next ten points to regain a 7-point margin with 6:25 on the clock.

The lead reached ten when Bowdoin's Alex Halpern hit a 3-pointer with 3:48 remaining before Adetosoye led the Rochester comeback attempt that fell just short.

For the game, the 'Jackets ended at 35% shooting overall (22-63) and from 3-point range, making 6-of-17 shots from distance. URochester grabbed 31 rebounds and did a good job defensively, forcing 17 Bowdoin turnovers.

Bowdoin meanwhile shot 47% overall (28-60), but made just 3-of-18 attempts (17%) from 3-point range. The Polar Bears held a big advantage on the glass, pulling down 48 rebounds, for a plus-17 margin over the Yellowjackets.

Rochester is now off for the holiday break and will return to action in 2026, with a January 3 tilt on the road at Eastern University. UR's final non-conference game of the season follows, with the 'Jackets playing at RIT three days later.
