Grace Corelli had a shot at the buzzer, but her three-pointer hit off the front rim, and the University of Rochester women's basketball fell to the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks, 67-64, in their weekend finale on Sunday afternoon inside the Louis Alexander Palestra.
Stevens opened its largest lead of the day to start the fourth, scoring eight of the first 10 points of the quarter to open a 62-52 lead with 7:13 to play. Back-to-back triples stretched the Ducks' advantage to 10, 62-52, while Maya Abramson answered
Bridget Miller's jumper with a layup to keep the lead at 10.
Out of a timeout, though, the 'Jackets would regroup and quickly cut Stevens' lead to seven on a three by
Annelise Dexter with 6:42 remaining. Two minutes later,
Melis Alparslan's layup made it a five-point game, while after
Claire Groenewoud forced a turnover on Stevens' next possession, the senior cashed a three to make it a two-point game with under four minutes to play.
The Ducks called a timeout and went back up four on Olivia Schubiger's layup, while Miller went 1-for-2 at the line on the other end to keep Stevens' lead at just one possession. However, the Yellowjackets would go cold over the next three possessions, missing five field goals with a chance to tie or pull within one.
Then, forced to foul with 34 seconds left, Schubiger went 1-for-2 at the line, stretching Stevens' lead to four, 66-61. On URochester's ensuing possession, Corelli's three-pointer was blocked, and the 'Jackets sent Maya Abramson to the free-throw line with 21 seconds left.
Abramson went 1-for-2, and this time, Corelli banked in a three, pulling the Yellowjackets within a pair, 66-64, with seven seconds left.
Following a quick timeout by Stevens, the 'Jackets fouled Dorothy Loffredo, who went 1-for-2 at the line, giving Rochester a chance to tie with a three. However, Corelli's attempt hit off the front rim, and the Ducks escaped with a 67-64 victory.
Schubiger got the scoring start in the first quarter, getting Stevens on the board with a layup 30 seconds in, while both Rochester and the Ducks followed with seven missed shots, as the next bucket, a two-pointer by Miller, didn't come till just shy of the seven-minute mark.
Stevens opened an early first-quarter lead, as the Ducks shot 50 percent in the first quarter and 43.3 percent overall for the contest, leading 17-10 following Leyla Castro's triple with 3:39 left in the first.
However, the Alparslan sisters, Deniz and Melis, combined for the next seven points, with a three-pointer by Melis kick-starting the 7-0 run, while back-to-back layups by Deniz tied the game at 17 just shy of the two-minute mark of the first.
The Ducks would take a 21-19 lead after one, but a four-point play by Corelli to open the second quickly gave Rochester the lead. Isabella Duval would answer back with a triple of her own, one of three lead changes and three ties in the second period.
Franki Gomez answered back with a three to tie the score at 26 with 6:52 left in the second, while the score stood tied again at 28 after
Melis Alparslan scored off an assist from her sister just past the four-minute mark of the period.
Castro then hit another three to give Stevens a three-point advantage, while Schubiger's step-back made it a 33-30 lead with 2:40 until the halftime buzzer. However, the Yellowjackets would head into the back with back-to-back triples from
Hazell Nickerson and Gomez, taking a 36-33 lead at the half.
Both teams kept things close in the third, with three ties and three lead changes, before a late 6-1 run helped the Ducks take a 54-50 lead into the fourth.
With the win, Stevens moves to 6-2 on the year, while the Yellowjackets fall to 5-4.
Gomez led Rochester with 15 points, adding eight rebounds and an assist. Corelli joined Gomez in double figures with 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and a team-high four assists, while Miller led the 'Jackets on the glass with nine rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.
For Stevens, Schubiger led the Ducks with 19 points, one of a trio for Stevens in double figures.
As a team, Rochester shot 34.7 percent (25-for-72), and outrebounded Stevens, 48-35, including 16-5 on the offensive glass, which the 'Jackets turned into 18 second-chance points.
The Yellowjackets will open 2026 down the road in Brockport, NY, taking on SUNY Brockport on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
