‘Jackets Top Brockport, 13-10, For First Win

BROCKPORT, NY – University of Rochester women's lacrosse outscored the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles, 10-3, over the second and third quarters en route to a 13-10 win, the 'Jackets first of the year, on Wednesday afternoon at Dr. Linda Arena Field.

The Yellowjackets got on the scoreboard first against the Golden Eagles, scoring the first two goals of the contest. Lorelei King sank the game's first goal off an assist from Anna Rogers just shy of the 10-minute mark of the first, while just over two-and-a-half minutes later, Rogers' unassisted goal made it 2-0 with 7:38 left in the quarter.

Brockport, however, quickly responded with four goals of their own, three to wrap up the first quarter with a 3-2 lead, and another to start the second period. Alayna Foos got the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard 42 seconds after Rogers' score, beating Isla Albin for the score, while Karaline McCarthy leveled the contest at two goals apiece at the 6:02 mark of the first.

Rogers nearly put the 'Jackets back in front just past the four-minute mark of the first, hitting the post with her first attempt before her second went wide, while Hailey Lewkovich gave SUNY Brockport its first lead of the afternoon off Foos' assist, and sent the Golden Eagles into the second up 3-2.

Karaline McCarthy quickly made it 4-2 in favor of the Golden Eagles with her goal at the 14:18 mark of the second, but that'd be the last goal UR would allow for nearly 18 minutes of game action, as the 'Jackets outscored Brockport, 4-1 in the second quarter and 6-2 in the third.

Back-to-back scores by Gracie Giannettino, the first coming on a free-position attempt with 11:43 left in the second, with the second coming just 27 second later, tied the game at four-all. While Alyssa Gorny found the back of the net less than a minute later, scoring her 100th-career goal to give UR a 5-4 lead just past the 11-minute mark of the second.

Rochester would add another tally, this one from Kassi Boehl, assisted by Alyssa Gorny, with 4:05 left in the quarter and take a 6-4 lead at the half, and add two more goals to start the third before Brockport got back on the scoreboard.

Giannettino and Rogers each scored again to start the third, Giannettino finding the back of the net for the third time, while Rogers notched her second off Gorny's second assist.

With Rochester leading 8-4 with 11:31, Brockport won back the draw and scored on Sarah Kilburn's free-position attempt to break a nearly 20-minute scoreless stretch, and the Yellowjackets quickly answered with another tally from Gorny.

Gorny's goal with 8:48 left in the third made it a 9-5 advantage, while three more in the third after Foos' once again got Brockport on the board, gave Rochester a 12-6 lead heading to the fourth.

Giannettino scored three times to answer Foos' goal, the first after Arianna Reed saved Sara Mendelson's first shot, the second coming quickly after Maddie Bunting forced one of nine Brockport turnovers with 3:43 left in the third. While Giannettino's fourth goal of the quarter and sixth of the contest matched a career-high and put UR up six heading to the fourth.

An early fourth-quarter goal by Foos was quickly matched by Boehl, and though the Golden Eagles would pull within three scores late, scoring two goals in the final two minutes of the contest, Albin, made three saves in the final 30 seconds to help finish off the victory.

With the win, Rochester's first of the year, UR moves to 1-1, while SUNY Brockport falls to 0-2 on the season.

Giannettino led the Yellowjackets with six goals on 10 shots, while Boehl, Gorny and Rogers each scored two goals apiece. Gorny led UR with three assists for a total of five points, notching six draw controls, tied with Mendelson for a team-high.

Defensively, Campbell Sy cause a pair of turnovers while Talia Feldman and King each picked up two groundballs. In goal, Albin played all 60 minutes and made 11 saves.

Rochester is back on the road next Wednesday, March 5 for a matchup against SUNY Geneseo in Geneseo, NY at 4:00 p.m.
