SAN ANTONIO, TX – After dropping game one, 9-1, in a run-rule-shortened five innings, the University of Rochester softball earned a doubleheader split with a 7-2 victory in game two against the Trinity (TX) University Tigers on Wednesday evening at Trinity Softball Stadium. With the split, the Yellowjackets move to 3-7 on the season, while the Tigers now sit at 16-5.
GAME ONE: Trinity (TX) 9, Rochester 1 (5 inn.)
Riley Laygo got game one started with a single up the middle and took second on
Molly Mason's sacrifice bunt, bunt Trinity's Josephine Koelewyn would work around the leadoff single and a two-out walk, getting a groundout to first to keep UR off the board.
Molly Broccolo matched Koelewyn's effort in the bottom of the frame, stranding Ella Whitacre at second after a one-out single and stolen base, striking out Hannah Boudreaux and getting Carsyn Lee to ground out to send Rochester back to the plate.
Koelewyn worked around a leadoff double by
Bailey Nicholoff in the top of the second, while Broccolo again twirled a scoreless frame, keeping things scoreless with a fielder's choice and a groundout after a one-out single in the bottom of the inning.
But after UR left a pair on in the top of the third, the Tigers would push six runs across in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs on six hits and chasing Broccolo from the contest. Three-straight hits, two singles and a two-run double by Whitacre, got Trinity on the scoreboard, while a pair of fielding errors brought home another run, kept the inning alive, and allowed the Tigers to tack on four more.
Koelewyn's RBI single made it 4-0, while a batter later after
Maddie White relieved Broccolo, Hayden Del Toro's two-run single brought Trinity's lead out to 6-0. The Tigers looked to do more damage on Samantha Tagawa's single to center, but Laygo threw a run out trying to score from second, keeping the lead at just six.
Rochester then got one back in the top of the fourth on
Savannah Nowak's RBI single, plating Nicholoff, who reached on a leadoff single, to cut Trinity's lead to 6-1, but the Tigers would answer in the bottom of the fourth, before finishing off the run-rule victory with two more in the fifth.
Trinity extended its lead to 7-1 on Lee's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, and after UR went in order to start the fifth, the Tigers finished off the 9-1, run-rule victory with a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the frame.
Koelewyn (7-2) earned the win for Trinity, allowing one run on five hits over 5.0 innings pitched, while Broccolo (2-3) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits, striking out one over 2.1 innings pitched.
Laygo and Nicholoff each had two hits to lead UR at the plate, with Laygo going 2-for-3 while Nicholoff went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
GAME TWO: Rochester 7, Trinity (TX) 2
Lauren Keys got the start for the Yellowjackets in game two, and after the senior right-hander worked around a leadoff single in the top of the first, Rochester struck first in the top of the second.
Marie Kinchington drew a leadoff walk, and after
Jenna Gorecki reached on a fielding error,
Julianna Lyons smacked a three-run homer to right center, giving the 'Jackets a 3-0 lead. UR would later load the bases in the inning, looking for more, but Cameron Bishop, who relieved Megan Kriechbaum after just an inning and a third, got a flyout to end the threat and keep Rochester's lead at just three.
Trinity (TX) looked to respond in the bottom of the frame, putting two on with two out after back-to-back two-out hits by Peyton Bowser and Del Toro, but Keys got a groundout to strand the pair. And after the senior starter got a trio of groundouts in a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, Rochester would tack on two more runs in the top of the fourth.
With one out, Nowak singled to center, and Laygo reached on a two-base error to put runners at second and third for Nicholoff, who brought the pair home with a two-run double to center, increasing UR's lead to 5-0.
The Tigers would get two back in the bottom of the fourth on Leah Gonzalez's two-run blast to left, but Keys retired the next three Trinity batters to prevent any further damage.
Both teams went in order in the fifth, while Keys worked around another two-out baserunner in the sixth, getting Boudreaux to ground into a fielder's choice to strand another Tigers' baserunner.
In the top of the seventh, Rochester tacked on a pair of insurance runs, extending its lead to five, 7-2, with a sacrifice fly and RBI single. Nicholoff led off the inning and reached on an error, taking second on the errant throw by the shortstop, and
Rowan Mulholland followed with a single up the middle, putting runners at the corners with nobody out.
After Mulholland stole second, Kinchington made it 6-2 with a sacrifice fly to right, and after the Tigers made a pitching change, Lyons drove in her fourth run of the game with an RBI single, extending UR's lead to 7-2.
Trinity (TX) would threaten in the bottom of the inning, with a one-out walk and single putting two on with just one out, but Keys got Tagawa to ground into a 6-3 double play, ending the threat and finishing off the 7-2 victory.
Keys (1-1) earned the win, allowing just two runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort, walking one and striking out four. For Trinity, Kriechbaum (3-2) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on one hit over 1.1 innings pitched.
