PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester baseball team posted a pair of big rallies, completing a doubleheader sweep over visiting Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.
Rochester stunned the Gators 13-12 in game one with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the ninth, with
Jack Corcoran ripping a solo shot and
Josh Leadem providing a walk-off 2-run blast. In game two, UR spotted Allegheny a 7-0 lead after two and a half innings, but stormed back and earned a 10-8 triumph to earn the sweep.
The pair of wins moves Rochester to 3-6 on the season, with Allegheny falling to 5-7 through this point in the campaign.
Game 1: Rochester 13, Allegheny 12
Corcoran and Leadem were the heroes in the ninth inning for Rochester, blasting a pair of home runs for the Yellowjackets to complete the game one comeback.
The solo home run by Corcoran, his second of the week, capped a remarkable game at the plate in which the senior went 5-for-5, matching the UR single-game hits record. Corcoran ended up with a double, home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
Leadem meanwhile, finished off the opener with three hits, including a double and home run, four RBI and three runs.
Allegheny took the early lead with an RBI triple from Tyson Bryant-Dawson in the top of the first, but Rochester answered right away with an
Alexander Gonzalo RBI infield single.
UR starter
Mark Aaronson got into trouble in the second inning, yielding five runs to fall behind 6-1. The big hit for Allegheny was a grand slam home run over the center field wall by Matt Jennings.
The Yellowjackets chipped away with a pair of runs in the second inning, with
Sammy Besztery providing an RBI fielders choice and Leadem ripping a double to left center, scoring a run.
In the third, Corcoran provided a 2-run double to left center, making the Allegheny lead just one, at 6-5.
The Gators put up another big inning in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs, the bulk of which came on a Tyler Skaggs 3-run blast to center.
UR again showed its resiliency, plating two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Leadem singled in Besztery and later came around to score after a wild throw on a steal of third base.
The next inning, Rochester continued its comeback, scoring two more runs to make the score 10-9 Allegheny. Besztery had another RBI on a fielders choice and Gonzalo walked with the bases loaded to force in another UR run.
Meanwhile, 'Jacket reliever
Derek Llanes began to settle in, tossing 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh.
Rochester knotted the game up in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch-hit single from senior
Colby Cruser.
Cruser had two clutch pinch-hit base knocks.
After the both teams were sent just three batters to the plate in the seventh, a third home run of the game by Allegheny, by Nick Banez, gave the Gators a 12-10 lead in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Corcoran launch a moon shot over the scoreboard and into the Genesee River on the first pitch of the inning to cut the deficit to one run.
An error allowed
Ethan Jaquette to reach and two batters later, Leadem ended it with his 16th career home run in a Rochester uniform, moving into solo fifth all-time in program history.
Besides leaders Corcoran and Leadem, first-year's
Benjamin Garber and
Tristan Datta each scored a pair of runs for the Yellowjackets, while Besztery and Gonzalo finished with two RBI's each.
On the mound, Llanes pitched four solid innings in relief, striking out three, but was tagged for a pair of home runs.
Thomas Blaydes picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of work.
Game 2: Rochester 10, Allegheny 8
In the nightcap, Allegheny used a six-run third inning to vault in front 7-0, looking to salvage a split of the doubleheader.
William Wolff had a bases-clearing 3-run double down the left field line in the big inning, with Banez also providing a run-scoring triple in the frame.
Rochester's second comeback of the day started right away though, with the Yellowjackets getting four runs in the third inning, all of which were unearned thanks in part to a pair of Gator errors.
Sammy Smith and Datta both had sacrifice flies, with another run scoring on a Besztery bunt that was thrown away.
Allegheny tacked on another run in the fourth to make the score 8-4, and it would remain there until the bottom of the sixth when Rochester scored three times to make it a 1-run contest.
Again, an Allegheny error extended the inning, allowing the Yellowjackets to capitalize.
Matt Rieth laced an RBI double to left, with Garber following with an RBI triple to right center. During the next at-bat, the first-year would scamper home on a wild pitch to make it an 8-7 ballgame.
Reliever
Zach Herzog kept the momentum going for Rochester in the top of the seventh, setting down the Gators in order with a pair of strikeouts before Cruser again came up with a game-tying pinch-hit base hit in the bottom half of the inning. This time, the senior captain blasted a solo home run over the center field wall to knot the game up at 8-all.
UR took the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Datta's 2-out grounder to short was thrown away, allowing two runs to touch home plate, putting the Yellowjackets in front 10-8.
In the ninth, Leadem moved from center field to the mound and closed the door for the save, pitching around a 1-out walk.
For the game, Garber was terrific out of the nine-hole in the order, going 4-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Jaquette went 2-for-4 with a run in the leadoff spot.
UR starter
Sunil Lindsay struck out five batters in three innings, but was tagged with seven runs in his first career home start on Towers Field.
Andrew Lenhard tossed 1.2 innings in relief before Herzog took over and was stellar, allowing just two hits and one walk over 3.1 innings, striking out four. Leadem's save was the third of his career, in just eight pitching appearances.
Rochester continues its early season home stand on Sunday, hosting St. John Fisher at 7 pm. The Sunday game was initially scheduled for a noon first pitch, but was moved back due to projected poor weather during the day.
