RPI Wins Tight Lax Contest, 11-10 Over UR

TROY, NY – In a game that featured several long scoring runs, host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute edged the University of Rochester 11-10 in a Liberty League women's lacrosse matchup on Friday afternoon at RPI's East Campus Athletic Village Stadium.

Rensselaer improves to 5-2 on the season and moves to 2-0 in conference play, while the Yellowjackets drop their league opener, moving to 3-3, 0-1 Liberty League on the 2025 campaign.

In Friday's matchup, the Yellowjackets were able to jump on top early, scoring the first two goals of the contest, one each by Alyssa Gorny and Gracie Giannettino.

Less than a minute after Giannettino scored to make it 2-0, RPI notched its opening score of the game, kickstarting a five-goal run spanning the first and second quarters.

The Engineers scored two late first period goals and then added two more in the first five and a half minutes of the second quarter to go up 5-2. Two of RPI's goals in the run were when Rochester had players carded and the Yellowjackets were playing a player down.

Midway through the second, Gorny found Anna Rogers for the goal and a minute later Kassi Boehl found the net, cutting the RPI lead down to just one.

Before halftime, RPI converted another woman-up opportunity and then scored in the final minute of the period to make the score 7-4 heading into intermission.

After the break, RPI scored its third player-up goal of the contest to start the third quarter scoring and made it five in a row again, with two more tallies before Rochester got on the board in the second half.

Trailing 10-4, the Yellowjackets mounted a huge rally, scoring six straight to pull even 10-10 midway through the fourth.

Rochester's comeback started with goals scored 22 seconds apart late in the third quarter from Lorelei King and Sara Mendelson.

As play shifted to the fourth, Rochester kept the momentum going, with Gorny making it a 10-7 game just 18 seconds into the period.

Giannettino then sandwiched two scores around a Rogers tally to knot the game at 10-all with just 6:44 remaining in regulation.

The score remained tied for the next few minutes, with both teams having possessions, but RPI eventually took the lead on a goal by Ella Graff with 2:50 on the clock.

Rensselaer corralled the next draw control, but UR keeper Isla Ablin made the save to give the Yellowjackets the ball with under two minutes to play.

After a Rochester timeout, UR completed a successful clear and got off a pair of shots on frame, but RPI keeper Jenny Canfield made two big saves, denying Giannettino and Gorny with about a minute left.

RPI scooped up the ball after the second save and then traversed down the field and was able to kill off the remaining minute on the clock to seal the victory.

Giannettino finished with three goals on six shots, while Gorny tallied two goals and one assist. Rogers scored twice on three shot attempts.

Defensively, Campbell Sy had five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Isabella Murabito caused two turnovers. Gorny added five draw controls to lead UR and Ablin ended the game with nine saves.

Three players, Graff, Lisa Boehmer and Kira Abdelsayed had two goals each for the Engineers, while Canfield finished with 10 saves in net.

UR is right back in action on Saturday afternoon, playing its second league contest of the year, traveling to Skidmore College, with the opening draw set for 2 pm.
