ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team got off to a fast start, scoring 13 runs over the first four innings in a 15-4 victory over host Bard College in a cross-divisional Liberty League matchup on Friday afternoon at Honey Field.
Six Yellowjackets finished with multiple hits in the game, with all nine starters either recording an RBI or a run scored in the contest. Sophomore
Sammy Besztery had a career game, smacking four hits, three of which were doubles while driving in six and also scoring twice.
Jackson Reed went 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, while
Alexander Gonzalo had 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI.
Josh Leadem scored four times and was a menace on the basepaths, stealing three bases, adding to his UR all-time record.
The win pushes Rochester's overall record to 10-10 and 5-4 in the Liberty League, while Bard drops to 3-19-1 on the year and 1-9 in conference play.
UR jumped on the Raptors early, plating three runs in the top of the first. With two outs, and two runners on, Besztery laced a single to center to score Leadem and
Colby Cruser to open the scoring. After a walk,
Luke Gregory ripped a base hit to left center, making the score 3-0 'Jackets.
Bard pushed one run across in its half of the first off of starter
Sammy Rosenfield, but the Yellowjackets responded right away in the top of the second, putting up a four spot to boost the lead to 7-1.
In the second, four straight 2-out hits fueled the run, with three going for extra bases. Leadem tripled in Reed. After Gonzalo singled to score Leadem, Besztery and
Ethan Jaquette posted back-to-back doubles to build the 'Jacket advantage.
The Raptors once again added just a single run to their total in the second before Rochester scored four more times in the top of the third. Besztery again provided the big hit, going opposite field for a two-bagger to drive in two during the big inning. Reed singled to score
Sammy Smith and Gonzalo lifted a sacrifice fly to center as well in the inning.
During the fourth,
Jack Corcoran made it four straight innings with a run for Rochester, driving in Smith with a groundout, moving the score to 12-2.
Bard sandwiched single tallies in the fifth and sixth around an RBI single from Smith in the UR half of the sixth inning, before Rochester completed the scoring for the day in the top of the ninth, with two additional runs.
The Yellowjackets used a trio of pitchers in the win. Rosenfield was credited for the win, going 3.1 innings on the mound. He allowed 3 hits and 2 runs while walking 4. He added four strikeouts.
Matt Casiero struck out three in 2.1 innings of relief, while
Thomas Blaydes finished off the game, going 3.1 scoreless innings, earning a save. He allowed just one hit and one walk while fanning four Bard hitters.
Weather forced game one of the doubleheader to be moved up a day, with the series concluding on Saturday afternoon (weather permitting) at 1 pm.
