Clarkson Snaps Rochester’s Win Streak at 10 Straight

POTSDAM, NY – The University of Rochester softball team snapped its 10-game win streak on Saturday, splitting a Liberty League doubleheader against host Clarkson University at Scott Field.

Rochester tossed a shutout in game one, winning 7-0, behind a strong effort from a pair of pitchers, before the Golden Knights rebounded with a 4-2 triumph in game two.

The split moves UR's record to 13-9 overall and 5-1 in Liberty League play, while Clarkson sees its record now at 14-11 and 4-2 in the Liberty League.

Game 1: Rochester 7, Clarkson 0
Junior Molly Broccolo and senior Lauren Keys combined on a 3-hit shutout as the Yellowjackets posted their fifth shutout of the 2025 season.

Broccolo tossed 5.2 innings of 1-hit ball, striking out two while facing just one batter over the minimum in that span. Keys took over and got the final four outs of the game, surrendering two hits and striking out one.

Offensively, Bailey Nicholoff picked up right where she left off on Friday, smacking a solo home run to lead off the game in the top of the first. The senior outfielder ended up 1-for-3, but drove in two runs and scored three times in game one.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning. Sophomore Riley Laygo reached on an infield single with the bases loaded, driving in Savannah Nowak. Up next, junior Rowan Mulholland laced a 2-run single up the middle to move the score to 4-0.

The next inning, Rochester boosted its lead even further. A throwing error on a Maithili Shah hit allowed one run to score. Nicholoff drove in another with a fielders choice and Laygo added another RBI single to her ledger.

Overall in the game, Laygo, Mulholland and Nowak all finished with two hits. Nowak scored twice, while Laygo and Mulholland each drove in a pair.

Game 2: Clarkson 4, Rochester 2
The Yellowjacket bats were stymied in game two, with Clarkson pitcher Devin Fitzpatrick tossing a complete game while allowing just four hits and two unearned runs. She struck out three and walked one.

Clarkson got all the runs it needed on one swing, with Lexi Rydelek launching a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third to open the scoring.

Rochester got on the board in the top of the fourth. Mulholland led off with a double to right. Jenna Gorecki followed with a walk to put runners at first and second.

The next batter, Julianna Lyons, laid down a sacrifice bunt that was botched by the Golden Knights, allowing Mulholland to score from second. A Molly Mason ground out added another run to the tally, scoring pinch-runner Shah, cutting the lead down to one at 3-2.
Another Rydelek home run in the bottom of the fifth, this one a solo shot, gave Clarkson an added run to cushion the lead in the late innings.

In the sixth, Rochester went down in order and Fitzpatrick pitched around a one-out single in the seventh to seal the victory.

Clarkson's win was the first in the last 11 games against Rochester, dating back to the 2021 season.

In the circle for UR, Maddie White took the loss, giving up six hits and three runs in two-plus innings. Keys relieved and allowed one run on four hits over the final four frames.

Up next, Rochester is set for a non-league matchup next Wednesday at Nazareth University before hosting RPI and Skidmore in conference doubleheaders next Friday and Saturday.
