GENEVA, NY – The University of Rochester women's tennis team, fresh off a national ranking inside the Division III top-40, posted an impressive regional win on Wednesday evening, defeating host William Smith College 7-0 at the Bristol Field House.
Rochester (8-4), moved up to #36 in Division III in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, released on Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops William Smith to 4-6 on the season. UR's win avenges 6-3 loss to the Herons from the 2023-24 season, with the Yellowjackets now leading the all-time series 37-25 in 62 meetings between the schools.
The Yellowjackets 7-0 win is the fourth this season and UR's third in the last four matches.
Overall in the match, the Yellowjackets took eight of the nine matches contested, with the one loss, which came at second doubles, coming in a tiebreaker.
UR took the one doubles point in the match with convincing wins at third and first doubles. The team of
Maya Bravo and
Lauren Kallas won 6-2 at number three over Julia Pida and Mae Kellersman to get things started.
At number one doubles,
Josephine Libby and
Katie Yang won 6-3 against Haley Levine and Grace Manga to clinch the 1-0 lead for Rochester.
The final doubles match went to the Herons at number two, with Natalie Haythorn and Marin Montagne outlasting
Sanjana Karnam and
Jasmin Toor 7-6 (7-4).
In singles, the Yellowjackets ended up taking five of the six matches in straight sets. Libby took the first point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top spot, defeating Haythorn.
At four, Toor won 6-0, 6-4 against Magna to put UR up 3-0 in the overall match, with Bravo earning the clinching point at number three, topping Kellersman 6-3, 6-1.
Yang kept it rolling for the Yellowjackets with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number two against Levine.
The sixth singles match between
Neha Dania and Bethany Walker was the lone three-set affair of the day. Walker started with a 7-6 (10-8) win to open the match, but Dania rallied, winning 6-4 in the second set and 10-6 in a tiebreak to keep the shutout going.
Karnam closed out the match with another win for UR, topping Montagne 6-4, 6-3 at five.
Rochester returns home for a pair of matches this weekend, hosting SUNY Oneonta on Saturday and Oswego State on Sunday.
