‘Jackets Drop UAA Championship Opener to 4th-Ranked Chicago

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – The University of Rochester men's tennis team fell to the fourth-ranked University of Chicago Maroons, 4-0, in the University Athletic Association Men's Tennis quarterfinals at Sanlando Park on Friday morning.
 
The reigning NCAA Division III Champions, UChicago, secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, and then won the first three singles matches to earn a 4-0 victory and advance to the UAA Semifinals.
 
At No. 3 doubles, Chicago's Robert Zhang and Markus Ekstrand topped Kavin Shukla and Liam Rieger, 6-0, while at No. 1 doubles, No. 3/2 Andrei Leonov and Pat Otero defeated UR's top doubles team of Krish Vennam and Ahaan Malhotra, 6-1.
 
With the Maroons securing the doubles point, Alan Wang and Surya Rajamani's matchup with Alexander Ekstrand and Derek Hsieh would remain unfinished, with Chicago's double's pair leading 5-2.
 
In singles action, Shukla would take a set from Chicago at No. 4 singles, while Andy Liu led Hsieh, 5-2 and Wang and No. 12/4 Emil Grantcharov stood tied at 4-4, both midway through the second set, but the Maroons earned wins at No. 5, 6 and 1 singles to close out the victory.
 
Chicago picked up its first singles win at the No. 5 spot, where Otero topped Malhotra, 6-2, 6-2, while Jack Wong topped Josh Chu at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
 
At No. 1 singles, Vennam bounced back from an early deficit in set one to level the set at 4-all, but No. 5/3 Ekstrand eked out a 7-5 set-one victory, before taking set two, 6-1, to clinch the match, 4-0, for the Maroons.
 
In the unfinished contests, Shukla and Ajer Sher stood tied at 1-1, each having taken a set, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, while Liu led 5-2 in the second set over Hsieh at No. 3 singles after dropping the first set, 6-4.
 
With the win, No. 4 Chicago moves to 20-2 on the year, while the Yellowjackets drop to 9-8.
 
Rochester now moves into the consolation bracket and will face 9th-ranked Carnegie Mellon in the UAA Championship Consolation Semifinals on Saturday, April 26 at 12:30 p.m.
