University of Rochester football senior wideout Trey Johnson was selected as the 2025 recipient of the John A. Vitone Sportsmanship Award, as announced at the University of Rochester Department of Athletics and Recreation Awards Banquet on Monday, May 5.

A four-year starter, Johnson capped off a stellar career with D3football.com Fourth-Team All-America honors this past fall, in addition to earning First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-Liberty League honors each of the past two years. Johnson ranks first in program history in both receptions (171) and receptions per game (4.89), as well as top-10 in numerous other receiving and returning categories.

For his career, Johnson caught 171 receptions for 1,790 yards and 11 touchdowns, a 10.5 yards per reception average, while adding 1,239 return yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 97-yard kick return this past year at Hobart.

Johnson, an economics major, is a team captain and Take-5 Scholar, a four-time Liberty League All-Academic selection and a three-time nominee to the College Sports Communicators All-District Team, and was recently named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society.

"Trey is one of those athletes that we all love to coach," Head Football Coach Chad Martinovich said. "He sets the right example on and off the field. He has worked extremely hard to become a vocal leader and aligns himself with the coaching staff's vision of what our team culture should be. When you need someone to volunteer for anything, he's the first to respond. Trey is the first one to pick a teammate up when he is down and sets the right example on how to go about things on and off the field."

Inaugurated in 1995 and named for Coach John Vitone in 1998, this award is presented annually to a male athlete for outstanding sportsmanship in the men's intercollegiate sports program.

John Vitone was an assistant football coach at the University for 25 years, 17 as the defensive coordinator. He also served as the Coordinator of Club Sports from 1977 to 1991 and was instrumental in attracting many outstanding student-athletes to the University, well known for his recruiting ability and style. The varsity weight room was renamed in his honor, shortly after his passing in 1992, and Coach Vitone was inducted into the Athletics & Recreation Hall of Fame in 1997.
