PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester men's soccer team battled an unbeaten Hobart College squad to a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rochester's goal game off the foot of
Milos Bisenic early in the second half. The lead looked to hold up, but unfortunately the Yellowjackets were whistled for a foul in the box with about fifteen minutes to go, leading to the game-tying penalty kick goal.
The back-and-forth game featured several chances for the Yellowjacket (2-2-2), with Bisenic just missing on a few other opportunities and
Pasquale Carusone one-timing a shot off the crossbar in the second half.
Overall, the same was a physical one, with 35 combined fouls called between the teams. Hobart (4-0-1) was issued all three of the yellow cards in the match.
Early in the first half, a close foul just outside the box yielded a scoring opportunity for Rochester. Bisenic lined up a hard strike towards the left post, but his attempt just sailed wide.
Later on in the period, good work up the right sideline by
Johnny Makula set up two excellent shots for the 'Jackets. The first was a one-timer shot by
Will Fallona that was saved point-blank by Hobart keeper Tommy Chyzowych. Less than a minute later, a similar setup found the foot of Bisenic, but his shot slipped off to the right of the net.
As play shifted to the second half, a similar situation unfolded with a Hobart foul early on setting up a UR free kick in a dangerous spot in close. This time Bisenic connected, curling a perfect shot from 28 yards into the top corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
The Yellowjackets nearly doubled the lead in the 72nd minute. Makula came charging up the left side this time setting up the play, sending a cross in front. The pass slipped by
Kamal Ibrahim and two Hobart defenders to a wide open Carusone, but the sophomore's one-timer cracked off the center of the crossbar and away to safety, keeping the UR lead at just one.
Two minutes later, Carusone and Makula reversed roles in another scoring opportunity for Rochester. This time Carusone chipped a ball up from the right side and in near the crease where Makula attempted a hard volley shot that was on goal. Chyzowych was alert though, making the save in the Hobart goal.
Shortly after a Hobart corner in the 75th minute, one player from each team got tangled up in the box, allowing the official to call a penalty kick chance. After some deliberation and clarification from the assistant referee, the call stood and Hobart's Will Redman stepped up and converted to level the score at 1-1 with 15 minutes remaining.
In the 80th minute, a pass up to Ibrahim yielded a breakaway chance for URochester, but the graduate students first touch was a bit heavy and Chyzowych read the play well, coming off the line to thwart Ibrahim's left-footed shot attempt.
Over the final ten minutes, the Statesmen applied pressure offensively with three shots, but none ended on frame and the score finished at 1-1.
On the night, Rochester ended up with a 14-11 lead in shots. Hobart took six of the eight corners in the match.
Ben Ziegler finished with one save for the Yellowjackets, while Chyzowych was credited with five saves for Hobart.
Rochester's next match is a road contest at St. John Fisher on Wednesday evening starting at 7 pm.
