PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Junior
Grayson Honig slapped in a cross from teammate
Sophia Cuneo a little over 90 seconds into the first overtime, lifting the University of Rochester field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over visiting SUNY Cortland on Wednesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Honig's game-winner was the 10th of her career in the Rochester uniform, moving the junior into the top-10 all-time in team history.
The victory pushes #23 Rochester to 7-1 on the season, with Cortland falling to 2-4 overall in 2025.
Throughout the game, both teams played evenly matched statistically, with Rochester ending the contest with a 13-9 shot advantage. Neither team attempted more than four shots in a single quarter in the defensive battle.
The Yellowjackets edged in front with six corners to Cortland's five, with the last one leading to the game-winning goal.
In goal, senior
Kara Houston picked up another shutout for the Yellowjackets, making two saves, while teammate
Cassidy Romano added a defensive save in the win. Cortland's keeper, Emma Morgan made seven stops for the Red Dragons.
Rochester's first penalty corner of the game two minutes into the game yielded a strong scoring opportunity for the Yellowjackets. After inserting the play, Cuneo camped at the post and nearly one-timed in a crossing pass from
Anya Arseneau, but Morgan was in position on the goal line, making the stop.
With 6:15 left in the opening period, a deflected long hit into the circle sailed up high towards the 'Jacket cage, but Houston got a pad on it, denying Sadie Hoffmann the chance to grab the lead for Cortland.
In the 22nd minute, Cortland went on the attack and earned back to back penalty corners, with the second leading to Romano's defensive save. After the ball swung around to Lillian Morse on the right wing, a shot ended on frame, but Romano was in solid position, guarding the right post, keeping the game scoreless.
As the clock was ticking down in the final minute of the opening half, senior
Sofia LaFalce had a terrific opportunity after a steal by Honig in Cortland territory. After a lead pass sent LaFalce into the circle, the senior had an open look at the cage, but her shot from eight yards sailed wide.
With 2:10 left in the third quarter,
Erin Foley nearly found the back of the net for Rochester, but her goal on a follow-up rebound of a point-blank chance in front was taken off the board after it was ruled the ball hit her foot.
Midway through the fourth, Honig had a chance to end the game in regulation with a goal, but her stuff attempt from three yards out was stopped by Morgan in the goal. On the follow-up, LaFalce had a backhand attempt slip wide right of the cage.
The scoreless regulation time set the stage for the 7-on-7 overtime session. Cortland's Hoffmann had back-to-back shots blocked away by
Abigal Mateer in the opening minute of the extra frame.
Less than a minute later Honig ended it, cashing in on the third of three straight chances by the Yellowjackets following their lone corner attempt of OT.
On the game-winning play, Cuneo inserted the ball to Arseneau who dribbled into the circle and fired a shot from the right side that was saved. The rebound bounced to
Molly Newbold who chipped her attempt wide of the right post where Cuneo was stationed.
Cuneo followed by tapping the ball out of midair across the goalmouth to Honig for the tap-in game-winning goal.
Rochester's win over the Red Dragons was just the fifth in 40 all-time meetings against SUNY Cortland, with all five wins coming in the last ten meetings. The teams have had a flare for the dramatics as well, with four of the last eight matchups needing overtime to decide a winner.
The Yellowjackets have Thursday off before returning to the field on Friday afternoon, hosting Oswego State in a 4 pm tilt at Fauver Stadium.
