PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – A goal from senior
EliJose Araujo with under 12 minutes remaining broke a scoreless tie, leading to a 1-0 victory for the University of Rochester men's soccer team over Clarkson University on Saturday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Araujo tallied his first goal of the season, heading in a rebound after
Pasquale Carusone's shot attempt was saved in the 79th minute of the contest.
The win propels Rochester to 4-2-2 on the year, with the Yellowjackets remaining unbeaten in their last six contests after starting the season with back-to-back losses. Clarkson falls for the first time in the 2025 campaign, moving its record to 3-1-2.
Graduate student
Ben Ziegler made five saves in goal, earning his third shutout of the season for the Yellowjackets. His counterpart in the Clarkson goal, Carter Kladstrup, also made five stops.
The first half was a defensive battle, with the teams combining for just four total shot attempts.
Both teams had one good scoring chance in the opening ten minutes.
Early in the fifth minute, a corner kick was deflected away by Rochester, but a long kick in and a back header flick set up Daniel Medina with an opportunity in the crease. The back pass was mishandled by the 'Jacket defense, giving Medina a loose ball to put on goal, but Ziegler came up with the big save.
Less than four minutes later,
Milos Bisenic put a shot on frame for the Yellowjackets following a long
Kol Bassuk throw in, but his 8-yard shot towards the left corner was stopped by a diving Kladstrup.
After the scoreless opening half, play in the final 45 minutes opened up a little bit, with both teams looking for a victory.
The Golden Knights had a pair of shot attempts in the 55th minute following a corner kick, but neither ended on target. Lars Stephensson had an attempt blocked by
Kyle Wong, with a Noah Partneza follow-up attempt sailing wide.
On the counter, Rochester followed with four straight shot attempts.
Johnny Makula's shot was the first of the bunch, with his edge of box strike curling around the right post wide.
A minute later, Makula sent up a pass to Carusone whose shot from the right wing caught the side netting on the goal.
Leading to the goal, UR's
Tyler Moran sent a long pass into the box where Carusone settled and spun around on the right side, firing a hard shot on goal that was saved by Kladstrup.
With the goalie on the ground and the ball loose in the air, Araujo was in the right place and headed the ball into the wide open net, securing the game-winner, the fourth of the senior's career.
After URochester took the lead, Clarkson was only able to get one more shot attempt in the contest, that coming less than a minute after Araujo's goal. That shot was a flick header by Paul Rolland off of a free kick, but Ziegler made the save, setting a new season-high in the process.
The Yellowjackets next contest is slated for 4 pm on Wednesday afternoon at SUNY Geneseo.
