McMullen Scores Lone Goal in Rochester’s 1-0 Win Over Geneseo

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – First-year Delia McMullen notched the only goal of the match in the 77th minute, lifting the University of Rochester women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

McMullen's score came by slamming in a rebound off a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar from Claire Baim.  The goal was McMullen's second of the year, as she becomes the first Yellowjacket to notch multiple scores in 2025, breaking a 10-way tie with nine other teammates.

The win improves 15th-ranked URochester to 4-0-3 on the season. Geneseo remains winless in 2025, falling to 0-4-3.

Neither team was able to muster much offense over the first half, with UR leading 4-2 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks at intermission. Geneseo's Emily McLouth made the lone save of the opening half, stopping an attempt off the foot of Natalie Santangelo in the 16th minute.

As play shifted to the second half, the Yellowjackets applied pressure offensively, with that leading to a 12-2 shot advantage.

Sydney Holmes and Femke Laudy tested McLouth early in the second period with shots from the edge of the box, but the Knights keeper saw both attempts all the way, making the easy saves.

In the 72nd minute, Geneseo got its best scoring chance of the night from Ella Yartym following a long throw in from the left side. After settling the ball, Yartym found space in the box and fired a turnaround shot on net, but first-year keeper Eleni McGuire made the save for Rochester, keeping the game scoreless.

A minute later, McMullen nearly found the back of the net on a hard left-footed strike from 25 yards out. The first-year juked a defender to get open in the center of the field and ripped a rocket towards the top center of the goal, with McLouth leaping up to save the ball over the crossbar.

Shortly after, McMullen was able to break the scoreless game notching the rebound goal. The score was initially set up on a long cross pass from Hannah Nagashima to Baim along the left wing. Baim attempted a volley off the top of her foot which clanged off the bar, but found McMullen unmarked inside the six for the wide open rebound attempt.

Overall in the contest, McGuire made two saves in her second straight shutout. McLouth finished with seven saves in the Geneseo net. Rochester ended leading 16-4 in shots and 9-4 in corners.

Up next, URochester hits the road and will take on 7th-ranked Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
