YORK, PA – With a trio of second-half scores in the span of less than eight minutes, University of Rochester men's soccer junior
Milos Bisenic netted the Yellowjackets' first hat trick since 2021, and helped URochester pull off a 3-2 comeback victory over the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.
Bisenic, who led all players with seven shots, saw a pair of early tallies in the sixth minute blocked, while Chase Broughman stopped an attempt by
Pasquale Carusone in the ninth minute before the Spartans broke through with an early score.
Just shy of 10-and-a-half minutes in, Shaun Apsley threaded the ball through Rochester's defense up to Talen Popolis, whose centering pass, which proved to be just out of the reach of
Ben Ziegler in goal, found Matt Martin. Martin finished off the double assist with a flick into the back of the net, giving York an early 1-0 advantage.
York then sent shots wide and high over the next six minutes, before Broughman made another save on a shot from Carusone at the 19:53 mark of the first.
Both teams would have several more opportunities before the half, starting with
Johnny Makula's attempt in the 26th minute. The UR sophomore nearly outran the Spartans' defense, but his shot was saved by Broughman.
Three minutes later, Ziegler returned the favor, stopping Matt Martin's shot after a turnover by the Rochester defense.
With a little under 15 minutes to play, Tannor Wiszneski nearly made it 2-0 but hit the crossbar with his attempt, and Ziegler made another save 50 seconds later on a shot from Demitri Ilovski.
Broughman would make one more save for the Spartans to keep Rochester scoreless at the break, saving
EliJose Araujo's attempt from the left wing in the 42nd minute, and UR would head into the break down one.
Dylan Marco then made it 2-0 just over nine minutes into the second, blasting in a York corner kick that the 'Jackets couldn't clear away after a York header.
However, URochester would get its offense into gear just minutes later, as Bisenic scored his first of three goals in the 56th minute.
Makula again got things going, racing through the midfield into the offensive zone and firing a shot on goal. And while Boughman saved the sophomore's shot again, a foul drawn by
Kamal Ibrahim on the rebound gave UR a penalty kick, which Bisenic put into the lower-left corner of the net to cut into York's lead.
In the 60th minute, Bisenic just missed a free kick from atop the box, sending his kick a bit high, but just over a minute later, the junior would create some space and score from nearly the same spot to tie the game at two.
And then just past the 63rd-minute mark, Bisenic capped off his hat trick, dribbling down the left wing and making his way into the box, where the junior curled a tremendous ball out of the reach of Broughman to give Rochester a 3-2 lead.
Bisenic nearly netted his fourth goal in the 69th minute, forcing another Broughman save before
Tyler Moran sailed his attempt over the net for a goal kick.
Defensively and with the lead, Rochester would hold York to just three shots down the stretch, none of which were on goal. UR blocked Tyler Napier's attempt in the 75th minute, while Gavin Huey's 85th-minute volley sailed wide.
One more late attempt by Owen Henderlite was again blocked by the Rochester defense, before the final buzzer sounded with the Yellowjackets ahead, 3-2.
With the win, Rochester's fourth straight, the Yellowjackets move to 6-2-2 on the year, while the Spartans drop to 4-3-3.
Bisenic led UR with seven shots, four of which were on goal and three of which went for scores. Carusone and Makula each added two shots, both of which were on goal, while Ziegler made three saves in 90 minutes in goal.
Rochester next hits the road to open conference play in Cleveland, OH against the Case Western Reserve University Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11:00 a.m.
