Yellowjackets Battle Brockport to a 2-2 Draw

BROCKPORT, NY – The University of Rochester men's soccer earned its first result of the 2025 campaign, playing to a 2-2 stalemate against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on Wednesday evening at Huntley Parker Field.

After the 'Jackets repelled an early offensive from the Golden Eagles just 14 seconds in, the two sides settled into the contest, with the early shot from Ryan Mathis saved by Ben Ziegler.

Tyler Moran put Rochester's first shot on goal in the ninth minute, firing the rebound off a UR free kick that forced Matthew Sandison to make his first of three saves on the evening. The shot resulted in a corner kick, which Brockport cleared and took things the other way.

After nearly 25 minutes of scoreless play, the Golden Eagles broke through in the 26th minute on Ryan Mathis' header, with the assist coming from Trevor Lagarde on a free kick from around 35-yards out. Mathis beat Ziegler with a header to the far-right post to give Brockport the lead, but it wouldn't take long for Rochester to find the equalizer.

Shots from Pasquale Carusone, Gavin Fischer and Moran were blocked and went wide over the next two minutes, before Carusone found the back of the net in the 34th minute to level the score at one-all.

A long through ball made its way through the Brockport defense, and after Kamal Ibrahim corralled it, a give-and-go from Johnny Makula and Carusone helped tie the score at one.

Despite a pair of chances from Will Fallona in the 48th minute and Ibrahim in the 66th minute, the score would stay level at one-all until a penalty helped Brockport take the lead.

A foul inside the box in the 69th minute resulted in a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles, which Mathis took and shot right down the middle, out of the reach of a diving Ziegler to give Brockport a 2-1 lead.

And without a shot over the next 12 minutes, it looked like that would be the final score, until UR again found the equalizer, this time with just over five minutes left.

UR defended and cleared a corner kick from Brady Reinagel in the 81st minute, allowing the 'Jackets to set up their attack. With just over five minutes left, Rochester forced a turnover offensively just outside the box, and Sebastian Ballesteros found Fallona for a header right in front of the net to tie the score at two-all.

Both Brockport and UR would have another chance later to break the tie, but Ibrahim and Khadim Amar's shots sailed high, and the two sides ended in a 2-2 draw.

With the draw, Rochester moves to 0-2-1 on the year, while Brockport now sits at 1-0-1.

Individually, five different Yellowjackets took two shots, with Fallona placing both of his on goal, including the 85th-minute equalizer. Carusone added UR's other tally on two shots while Ballesteros notched an assist and added a shot.

In goal, Ziegler made two saves and allowed two scores.

As a team, the Yellowjackets held a 14-8 edge, offensively, in shots, and 5-4 in shots on goal, while the Golden Eagles took five corners, compared to three for UR.

The Yellowjackets next make their way out of New York State for the first time this season, traveling to Reading, PA for a non-conference matchup at Alvernia University on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 12:00 p.m.
