UR Keeps Rolling with Shutout Victory over Brockport

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – No. 25 University of Rochester field hockey won its fourth-straight match to begin the year, downing the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

It was a dominant effort for the Yellowjackets, as UR outshot Brockport, 37-4, and held a 15-1 edge on penalty corners and held possession for much of the contest.

Grayson Honig fired in Rochester's first shot less than 30 seconds in, while UR earned its first of 15 penalty corners a little over two minutes into the contest. And while back-to-back defensive saves by Autumn Kraemer kept shots by Anya Arseneau and Sophia Cuneo from scoring, less than 30 seconds and two penalty corners later, the 'Jackets would take the lead.

Another shot from Arseneau, this one block, resulted in yet another penalty corner, and Rochester would take advantage and find the back of the net just shy of the three-minute mark of the first.

Arseneau again got the ball off the corner, but this time, her centering feed found Erin Foley, who knocked it into the back of the net for her third goal in four games, giving Rochester a 1-0 lead.

While UR's defense held Brockport without a shot in the first, the 'Jackets' offense continued to pelt Katelynn Banning and the Golden Eagles' defense, with 12 shots in the opening period. Arseneau had two more blocked and go wide, while Banning saved a pair off Sofia Mianzo's stick.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter, where Brockport earned its only penalty corner of the afternoon, and looked to tie the score at one. A little over two minutes into the second, Allison Greene inserted the corner for the visitors, who notched three-straight shots on goal over the next 20 seconds.

But Kara Houston was up to the task, making three saves on shots by Terralyn McLaughlin, Ava Sanchez and Sophia Jones in quick succession to keep Rochester in front by a goal.

And after Rochester earned yet another penalty corner on the opposite end, Arseneau finally found the back of the net to double UR's lead. Sophia Cuneo inserted the corner into Cassidy Romano, who skipped it over to Arseneau. The senior's right-wing, 23rd-minute blast found the back of the net, doubling the Yellowjackets' lead

Less than a minute later, Mianzo nearly added to URochester's lead, but Banning came up with back-to-back saves, and then added another on a shot by Reiley Murphy in the 27th minute to keep the lead at just two headed to the halftime break.

1:36 into the third, Rochester earned a penalty stroke, but Abigal Mateer's attempt sailed just wide. After UR earned another penalty corner, Banning came up with a save on Ella Krauss, one of 14 on the afternoon for Brockport's keeper.

However, UR would push another goal past Banning in the 39th minute, as Sophia Marcotte connected with Cuneo on a tap-in off a right-side cross, giving the Yellowjackets a 3-0 advantage.

Banning made three more saves down the stretch of the third, as the 'Jackets looked to make it 4-0, while UR sent 10 more shots her way in the fourth.

Kristina Federova put a shot on goal, saved by Banning, just shy of the 49-minute mark, while Maddy Colangelo had four attempts in quick succession midway through the quarter.

And while Rochester wouldn't make it 4-0, the Yellowjacket defense held the Golden Eagles to just one shot, blocked, in the fourth, closing out the 3-0, shutout victory, URochester's third in four games.

With the win, Rochester remains unbeaten at 4-0 on the year, while SUNY Brockport takes its first loss, dropping to 2-1.

Offensively, Arseneau led Rochester with eight shots, while Mianzo had a team-high four shots on goal.

Defensively, Houston played 45 minutes and made three saves, while Katherine Jensen finished out the final 15 minutes, facing just one shot.

The Yellowjackets have a quick turnaround as they travel to Oneonta, NY, for a matchup against Hartwick College on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 4:00 p.m.
