NEW YORK – The University of Rochester women's basketball held top-ranked New York University to its season-low scoring output on Friday, but ended up on the short end of things, falling by a 75-54 score at the John A. Paulson Center.
The Violets (13-0, 2-0 UAA), two-time defending NCAA Division III champions, continue their long winning streak which has stretched to 75 games, spanning two and a half seasons.
Although the Yellowjackets (7-6, 0-2 UAA) held NYU to a season-low 75 points, over 25 points below the Violets scoring average, Rochester's offense couldn't get into rhythm either, posting its second-lowest scoring output of the year, and lowest since an opening night loss to SUNY Cortland.
Franki Gomez led URochester with a career-high 18 points, getting that total on 7-of-13 shooting, including going 3-for-5 from 3-point range.
Tia Poulakidas added ten points and eight rebounds for the 'Jackets, while
Melis Alparslan paced the reserves with nine points off the bench.
The NYU pair of Aila Kaibara and Zahra Alexander were the top scorers for the Violets, finishing with 16 and 22 points, respectively. Alexander went 8-for-9 from the floor, while Kaibara made three 3-pointers on the night. NYU's leading-scorer entering the night, Caroline Peper, was held to just seven points in the contest, well below her 20.0 point per game average.
In the early going, the Yellowjackets were able to hang right with the top-ranked Violets, grabbing a 6-4 lead following a M. Alparslan layup two and a half minutes in.
NYU responded by scoring nine straight points to go up 13-6 before URochester punched back with a 7-0 spurt to tie the game back up. Gomez,
Deniz Alparslan and
Annelise Dexter each had baskets for UR during the run.
After the opening ten minutes, NYU led by just four, up 17-13.
In the second, the Violet lead stretched out to 11 before Poulakidas and D. Alparslan combined for six straight points to trim the deficit to five. Eventually NYU found its footing offensively and moved its advantage out to a dozen points by intermission.
The third quarter was where NYU pulled away, holding Rochester to just four made field goals in a 16-9 period to extend the lead to 19 points.
In the final period, Rochester again hung close with the Violets, falling in the period by just two, 18-16, to reach the final spread of 21 points, the closest margin of victory for NYU so far during its unbeaten 2025-26 season.
Rochester's next matchup is another conference game on Sunday, playing on the road at Brandeis University, with tipoff set for noon.
