OSWEGO, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team was stout defensively and turned in a strong second half on offense to post a 4-0 victory over Oswego State on Tuesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium.
Rochester's win moves the Yellowjackets to 11-6 on the year, closing out the non-conference schedule. The Lakers fall to 6-10 with the loss.
It was a quick start for the Yellowjackets as Rochester got a penalty corner in the opening minute of the contest. UR's
Erin Foley got a shot off on the set play, but that attempt was saved by Oswego keeper Sam Kaurtheim.
Neither team got anything going over the next few minutes until the Yellowjackets earned another corner in the seventh minute. After a juke move at the top of the circle by
Hannah Mehta led to a shot on goal, Krautheim posted another save, with Foley trying for a rebound goal, only to have her chance sail wide.
At the 10-minute mark, URochester earned two more corners, but shots by
Kristina Fedorova and Mehta were blocked and saved, respectively.
It was the second quarter when Oswego finally was able to generate some offense, earning its first corner of the contest, but the Lakers ended up not being able to get a shot attempt off during the opportunity.
With under ten minutes to go in the half,
Sophia Cuneo had a terrific look to break the scoreless deadlock following a URochester corner, but her shot from five yards along the left wing trickled just wide right of the cage.
UR got two more sets of chances in the closing minutes of the second but were unable to score, leading to the teams sitting scoreless at intermission.
The Yellowjackets finally broke through with a goal six minutes into the third period, with Foley redirecting a shot just inside the left post off a cross from Mehta. The possession started with a hard hit into the circle by Fedorova that was deflected right on goal in front, eventually rebounding right to Mehta for the cross and assist.
Rochester's lead doubled shortly after, with
Molly Newbold making it 2-0 off another assist by Mehta. The UR junior co-captain gained possession and entered the circle, eventually making her way in front near the right post. While getting tripped up, she was able to send the ball across the goal mouth to Newbold for a 1-timer into the cage at the far post.
Early in the fourth, Fedorova blasted a hard right wing shot off a penalty corner that deflected in off an Oswego stick, making it a 3-0 Rochester lead. Cuneo picked up her fifth assist of the season on the play, sitting second on the Yellowjackets.
Attacker
Maya Ullrich had two terrific chances in front of the Oswego net in the 55th minute but her first shot was saved and a second sailed just wide right following a penalty corner.
Reiley Murphy capped the scoring for UR with just over three minutes left in regulation, deflecting in a left wing cross from teammate
Samantha Jacobia. Murphy's goal was her second of the season, while Jacobia's assist was her first collegiate point.
URochester's defense ended up pitching the shutout, holding the Lakers without a shot attempt and just the one corner that came back in the second quarter. The Yellowjackets meanwhile, finished the contest with 18 shot attempts, ten of which ended on frame. UR also earned 14 penalty corners.
In goal, Oswego's Krautheim finished with six saves.
Riley Leeser and
Madeline Mitchell split halves in goal and were not tested in earning the shutout.
Up next, URochester faces William Smith in a home game on Saturday in the regular season finale at 10 am.
