ST. LOUIS – Playing its second ranked opponent in three days, the University of Rochester women's basketball team came up short on the road, falling 62-55 to #15 Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon at the WashU Field House.
A cold shooting spell late in the game doomed the Yellowjackets (9-9, 2-5 UAA), as URochester was limited to just 2-of-12 shooting in the final period. WashU (14-4, 5-2 UAA) meanwhile, didn't fare much better in the fourth, but hung on for the win thanks to some solid free throw shooting in the last ten minutes.
Annelise Dexter led the Yellowjackets with 15 points and five rebounds off the bench, while
Claire Groenewoud added 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Bridget Miller also scored in double-figures, ending with ten points.
WashU's Lexy Harris finished with a game-high 17 points, while Sidney Rogers had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Catherine Goodwin supplied similar numbers for the Bears, ending with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
In the opening quarter, a 10-2 Rochester run pushed the Yellowjackets from being down three points to up five, sitting at 13-8 after six minutes of action. Dexter had four points in the run, while Groenewoud, Miller and
Grace Corelli each chipped in a bucket.
WashU responded though, closing the first quarter on an 11-0 run, taking a 19-13 lead into the first intermission.
Rochester posted a 17-14 score over the Bears during the second period, sending the teams into the locker room separated by three points at the break, with WashU up 33-30.
During the third, the Yellowjackets exploded on a 16-5 run over a five-and-a-half-minute span, turning a five-point deficit into UR's biggest lead of the game, up six at 46-40.
A Groenewoud triple started the rush, with Dexter training a 3-pointer shortly after. WashU answered with a trey on its end, but the 'Jackets scored ten of the next 12 points to jump in front by six with 3:32 left in the quarter.
Much like the first quarter, the Bears closed the third strong, scoring nine straight points to sit up 49-46 with ten minutes remaining. That stretch also started the cold shooting spell for URochester, with the 'Jackets going 0-for-4 to finish off the period.
Neither team shot well in the fourth, but the Bears were able to scratch out six of the first eight points to increase its lead to seven, up 55-48 at the midway point.
URochester got four straight points from the free throw line to get back within three, and had possession with a chance to tie following a Bears technical foul.
That possession ended with no points though, and at the other ends Rogers added a free throw to make it a 4-point WashU lead.
With under two minutes to play, Groenewoud hit her third 3-pointer of the contest to make it a 1-point game, but the Yellowjackets couldn't get any closer, with the Bears going 6-for-6 down the stretch from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
The Yellowjackets ended up outrebounding the Bears 39-35 in the contest, but WashU won the turnover battle, committing just 13 while forcing URochester into 19 giveaways.
Up next, the conference slate flips back around, with the Yellowjackets hosting Chicago and WashU at the Palestra next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
