University of Rochester women's basketball wrapped up its home schedule on a high note, defeating the Brandeis University Judges, 71-47, after celebrating its three-member senior class on Sunday afternoon inside the Louis Alexander Palestra.
Â
Graduate guard
Franki Gomez led URochester with 17 points, one of three Yellowjackets in double figures along with
Grace Corelli, who tallied a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while
Deniz Alparslan added 12 points, six rebounds and six steals.
Â
Alparslan got the scoring started for the Yellowjackets after the Judges and 'Jackets opened the first quarter with three-plus minutes of scoreless play, breaking the seal 3:05 into the first. And while Abby Kennedy gave Brandeis the lead with the game's next five points,
Franki Gomez connected on a three to even the score at five-all four minutes in.
Â
The Judges then retook the lead on Sofia Berisha's pull-up jumper, taking a 9-7 lead after Saviah Shabazz and Corelli traded jumpers, but that'd be the last lead Brandeis would hold the rest of the way.
Â
Rochester ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run, holding the Judges scoreless for nearly four minutes to end the quarter, and kept things rolling into the second, holding Brandeis scoreless for another three-plus minutes and opening the stanza with a 12-2 run.
Â
In total, from the 3:32 mark of the first till the 5:12 mark of the second, the Yellowjackets outscored Brandeis, 19-2, holding the Judges to just 1-for-13 from the floor and forcing five turnovers, while URochester shot 7-for-15 and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc themselves.
Â
Two
Peyton Jones free throws tied the score at nine with 3:32 left in the first, while Gomez's two and Corelli's three sent Rochester into the second quarter with a 14-9 lead.
Â
Annelise Dexter then cashed a triple on Rochester's first possession of the second to open up an eight-point lead, while buckets from Gomez and Corelli again stretched the 'Jackets' advantage to double digits, 21-9, with 6:36 left until the halftime buzzer.
Â
Brandeis finally got on the board in the second quarter on Berisha's pull-up jumper, but another five points from Alparslan and Corelli gave Rochester a 15-point advantage midway through the quarter.
Â
A 5-0 spurt from the Judges would pull Brandeis back within 11 with 1:40 to play in the first, but free throws from Alparslan and
Bridget Miller gave Rochester a 14-point lead, before a late jumper from Berisha made it a 12-point game, 34-22, at the half.
Â
Rochester again got on a run to start the third, stretching its lead to 21 with a 12-5 run to open the frame. Dexter started the scoring with back-to-back turnaround jumpers, sandwiched around the Judges' first bucket of the quarter, while three-straight layups from Gomez and Corelli made it a 19-point URochester advantage with less than five minutes to play in the third.
Â
And despite the Judges doubling up the Yellowjackets over the final four minutes of the third, the Yellowjackets still lead by 15, 48-33, heading to the fourth, and quickly put the game out of reach.
Â
Elena Delicado got the Judges on the scoreboard first to start the fourth, but the 'Jackets would hold Brandeis without a field goal for the next four minutes. Behind a 13-1 run, URochester over just 2:52, the 'Jackets put the game out of reach and took their largest lead of the afternoon with 5:34 to play.
Â
Following Delicado's bucket, Miller and Alparslan went 3-for-4 at the line to push Rochester's lead up to 16, while four-straight points from Gomez made it a 23-point game, 59-36, with 6:33 left.
Â
URochester forced a trio of turnovers and held Brandeis to just 1-for-3 from the field over the three-minute stretch, while after Shabazz got the Judges back on the scoreboard with two free throws, Miller triple extended the 'Jackets' lead to its largest of the game, 64-38, with just over five-and-a-half minutes left.
Â
From there, the 'Jackets coasted to victory, with a late
Macy Bacon triple making the final score 71-47, after Brandeis closed the gap late to 21.
Â
With the win, the Yellowjackets move to 10-12 (3-8 UAA) on the year, while the Judges fall to 13-9 (3-8 UAA) with the loss.
Â
As a team, Rochester shot 40.6 percent, 6-for-19 from three and 13-for-20 from the free-throw line, while the Judges connected on 24.6 percent of their attempts, shooting 4-for-12 from distance and 13-for-16 from the line.
Â
The Yellowjackets also outscored Brandeis in the paint, 32-10, and 15-8 off turnovers, and outrebounded the Judges, 48-38.

URochester hits the road for its final three regular-season contests, beginning with a matchup against Carnegie Mellon on Friday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh, PA.
