The University of Rochester men's tennis team dropped a close contest to the Ithaca College Bombers by the final score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
The Bombers would win all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and take an early lead against the Yellowjackets. Siddharth Desai and Gijs Fidler got things started for Ithaca with a 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over
Ethan Samora and
Tony Xu, while Luis Crespo and Ean Lantzy clinched the point with a 6-4 win over
Josh Chu and
Rahul Ravi at No. 2 doubles.
Sam Lopez-Cardenas and Ivan Kisic then finished off the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3 doubles over
Surya Rajamani and
Aiden Swartz, but the Yellowjackets would quickly tie things up in singles play.
Ravi earned the first point in singles action, topping Fidler at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, but the Bombers scored a win at No. 3 singles to go back up a point. Siddharth Vaada edged Xu at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to put the Bombers up, 2-1.
Ithaca then went up 3-1 with a win at No. 4 singles, as Crespo topped
Aiden Swartz in three games, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Training 3-1, the Bombers looked to put things away at No. 1 singles, but
Andy Liu picked up a ranked win over #14/6 Ivan Kisic, topping the 14th-ranked men's singles play in Division III, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), to pull Rochester within a point.
But the Bombers would clinch the win with a 6-4, 6-4 win from Carlos Hernandez over
Joseph Xia at No. 5 singles, before a win from Chu at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8, over Alex Mazza, pulled the Yellowjackets within a point on the final scoreboard.
Ithaca moves to 3-1 with the win, while the Yellowjackets drop to 2-3 with the loss.
URochester is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 22 when they host St. Lawrence at 2:00 p.m. inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
