CLEVELAND, OH – University of Rochester men's basketball fell to the Case Western Reserve University Spartans, 110-98, on Sunday afternoon inside Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The high-scoring affair featured 29 made triples between the two sides, with both teams shooting upwards of 55 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc.
Tomiwa Adetosoye led the 'Jackets with a double-double, scoring 25 points and dishing out 13 assists, tied for the sixth-most in a single game in program history, while
Justin Odibo added 20 points, and
John Mayhew scored 14.
For the Spartans, Ethan Edwards set a University Athletic Association and CWRU single-game record with a game-high 54 points, shooting 18-for-29 from the floor and 12-for-21 from beyond the arc.
The Yellowjackets got off to a strong start, opening the game on a 17-5 run over the first six minutes of the contest. Mayhew got the scoring started with a triple, and after Alex Vincent got the Spartans on the board a minute later, URochester scored the next nine points to open a 12-2 advantage.
Back-to-back scores from Adetosoye put the 'Jackets up five, while Odibo's first of six made threes made it a 10-2 Rochester lead just shy of the 16-minute mark of the first.
Theo Murray's driving layup less than a minute later gave the Yellowjackets a double-digit advantage, while Odibo's second triple with 14:17 left in the first gave URochester a 12-point lead, its largest of the afternoon.
CWRU would answer back with an 8-0 run over the next 2:31, pilling within four on Edwards' first made triple just past the 11:30 mark of the first. The 'Jackets slowed Case Western Reserve's run with a layup from Murray and
M.J. Young's triple, before Edwards added four more points to make it a five-point game with less than 10 minutes left in the first.
The Spartans would pull ahead on Andrew Fox's turnaround jumper with 3:51 left in the first, taking a 36-35 lead, but
Camden Fleming quickly answered with a three on the other end, and the 'Jackets would finish the first half on a 17-5 run to take an eight-point lead at the halftime break.
Anand Dharmarajan answered Fleming's three with one for the Spartans, but the Yellowjackets would hold CWRU to just two points over the next two minutes, turning a one-point deficit into a nine-point advantage. Back-to-back triples from Young and Murray capped off the 12-2 run, while
Jordan Owusu's layup just before the halftime buzzer gave Rochester a 52-44 lead at the break.
Rochester quickly extended its lead back to 12 to start the third, with
Corvin Oprea's driving layup capping off a 7-0 spurt that gave the Yellowjackets a 59-47 lead just shy of the 18-minute mark of the second half.
But with a pair of free throws on Case Western Reserve's ensuing possession, Edwards got back on the scoreboard and got himself going in the second half. The graduate transfer scored 38 of his 54 points in the second half, knocking down eight threes and shooting 12-for-18 from the floor.
Edwards pulled CWRU within three, 63-60, with 15:01 to play, capping off an 8-0 Spartan run. Edwards then hit three triples in a three-minute span to help the Spartans take the lead, capping off an 11-0 run to give Case Western Reserve a 71-65 advantage.
Another Edwards triple just past the 11-minute mark gave CWRU an eight-point lead, while Fox's hook shot gave the Spartans their first double-digit lead of the day, 76-66, with 10:09 left, before Odibo broke a near-five-minute stretch without a field goal for UR, knocking down a three to pull the 'Jackets within seven.
URochester would pull within three, 80-77, with just under eight minutes to play after a 6-0 spurt, but another Spartan run gave CWRU its largest lead of the afternoon, 96-82, with 4:06 remaining. Edwards scored seven points over the 14-3 run, and buried two more triples as the 'Jackets tried to mount their comeback down the stretch.
Odibo hit another three with 2:50 to play, but Edwards answered with a make on the other end to keep CWRU up 12. Rochester would get as close as nine down the stretch, but Edwards and co. made their free throws to help seal the 110-98 victory.
With the loss, Rochester falls to 11-13 (4-9 UAA) on the year, while the Spartans move to 11-13 (3-10 UAA) with the win. The 110 points are the most the Yellowjackets have given up since Feb. 18, 1975, when Hamilton College topped URochester, 113-99, and the first time Rochester has given up 100+ since March 1, 2025, at Emory.
As a team, Rochester shot 55.9 percent (38-for-68) from the floor, their best shooting percentage this season, 43.8 percent (14-for-32) from three-point range, and 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the free-throw line. The Spartans shot 55.1 percent (38-for-69), 45.5 percent (15-for-33) from three and 82.6 percent (19-for-23) from the line.
The Yellowjackets will wrap up the regular season when they travel to Atlanta, GA, to face Emory University on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2:00 p.m.
