Women’s Hoops Tripped Up at CWRU

CLEVELAND, OH – The University of Rochester women's basketball team sputtered offensively on Sunday afternoon, falling on the road in a University Athletic Association matchup to Case Western Reserve by a 63-50 score at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

URochester (11-13, 4-9 UAA) were held to just 50 points, the second-lowest total of the season, and lowest in UAA play, while also matching a season-high with 23 turnovers in the loss. Case Western Reserve earned the victory and pushed its season record to 10-14 overall and 3-10 in UAA.

The win earned CWRU Jennifer Reimer her 200th career victory with the Spartans, while senior Emily Plachta also hit a milestone, reaching 1,000 career points with CWRU.

Rochester's best offense on Sunday was done by the forwards, as senior Bridget Miller, junior Tia Poulakidas and first-year Hazell Nickerson combined for 24 points and 20 rebounds. Nickerson led all 'Jacket players with 11 points, while Poulakidas had six points and ten rebounds. Miller added seven points and five boards, while senior Claire Groenewoud led the guards with nine points.

In the opening quarter, a 9-2 Yellowjackets run midway through the period vaulted the visitors in front 13-6. Nickerson hit a jumper to start the spurt, with Deniz Alparslan, Macy Bacon and Poulakidas adding points to add to the 'Jacket lead.

CWRU closed the first scoring five straight to make the score 13-11 after one.

The Spartan run continued into the second, as Jordyn Call fueled what became a 13-2 run to pull CWRU ahead 19-15. Back-to-back Nickerson baskets tied the game back up, before CWRU took the lead right back with a nine-point run, and ended up holding the lead the rest of the way.

URochester got back into it late in the quarter, trimming the lead down to just five at halftime, trailing 29-24.

To start the second half, Groenewoud hit an old-fashioned 3-point play to get the Yellowjackets within two, but the Spartans got five straight points from Mya Hartjes to regain a comfortable lead.

Nickerson scored four straight for UR to pull Rochester back within four approaching the midway point of the period, but CWRU closed the quarter on an 11-3 surge, seeing its advantage reach double-digits, up 48-36, heading to the fourth.

The Yellowjacket defense combined to hold the Spartans to just one field goal for the first five minutes of the fourth, allowing UR to get back within six, but the CWRU offense got in gear late, rattling off ten straight points over 2:26 to seal the game away, with Plachta's 1000th-point layup giving the Spartans a 16-point lead.

CWRU turned the 23 'Jacket turnovers into 21 points, while the Yellowjackets held the advantage in bench scoring, leading 25-6. Rochester outrebounded the Spartans 49-45.

URochester closes out the 2025-26 season next Saturday with a road contest at Emory University, with the tip set for 4 p.m.
