Squash Heads to Philly, Will Compete at Nationals in Hoehn Cup

2/25/2026 10:40:00 AM

This weekend, the University of Rochester squash team will vie for a title in the College Squash Association (CSA) Divisional Team Championships, competing in the Hoehn Cup (B Division) for the fifth straight year.

The tournament will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Friday through Sunday, with the Arlen Specter U.S. Squash Center serving as the host facility.

The annual Hoehn Cup Tournament features teams ranked #13 through #20 among collegiate varsity squash programs. Next week, the Potter Cup (A Division) Tournament will be held, with the top-12 teams in the rankings competing for the overall collegiate squash national championship.

The Yellowjackets (6-6) will be the #8 seed in the Hoehn Cup bracket as the #20 team in the CSA entering the weekend. UR matches up against the division's top seed and 13th-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (14-5) in a contest scheduled for Friday at 6 pm.

That first round matchup will be a repeat contest from earlier this season. On November 9, MIT invaded Rochester and handed the Yellowjackets an 8-1 loss at the Lyman Squash Center. This weekend the Yellowjackets hope to reverse that result, keeping their playoff hopes alive. All-time against the Engineers the Yellowjackets lead the series 12-10, including this seasons matchup.

Win or lose on Friday, the Yellowjackets will play a second match, as the consolation section of the bracket will be played to decide the fifth and sixth place finishers. Saturday's second round contest will take place at 6 pm, with Sunday's potenial final round matches being set for noon.

The rest of the Hoehn Cup features second-seeded Amherst (#14) playing #19 Franklin & Marshall, Colby (#15) against Western (#18) in the 3-6 matchup and #16 Navy taking on #17 Middlebury in the opening rounds.

Last season, the Yellowjackets were the second seed in the Hoehn Cup but were upended in the opening round by Middlebury 5-4. URochester rebounded the rest of the weekend, winning the consolation bracket to finish fifth and 17th overall in the CSA.

Rochester has played in four matches so far this season against Hoehn Cup opponents, all being Yellowjacket losses. UR host Western and MIT in November, falling 5-4 and 8-1, respectively. In December, #15 Navy came to URochester and emerged with a 7-2 win. A month later, Franklin & Marshall triumphed over the Yellowjackets 7-2.

UR has been playing well as of late, winning four of its last five matches overall, a stretch that includes winning its seventh-straight Liberty League title, winning over Haverford and St. Lawrence two weekends ago.

So far in 2025-26, junior co-captain Dhirren Rajarathinam has the best overall record, winning 10 of 15 matches overall (9-3 at #2). Sophomore Thomas Valderrama has a 9-3 record and has moved up to the number three spot on the ladder. Sophomore Karim Moataz also is above .500 with a 7-5 record and currently is number six in the Yellowjacket lineup.
