The top-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team was led by a whopping six players in double-figure scoring to power past the University of Rochester 88-78 in a University Athletic Association matchup on Friday night at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
UChicago's victory moves the Maroons record to 17-2 on the season and 7-1 in the UAA, while the Yellowjackets fall to 9-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play. The Maroons win also completes a season-sweep over the 'Jackets, as last weekend in the windy city, UChicago earned a 72-63 win.
Rochester's
Corvin Oprea ended the contest with a game-high 24 points, making 9-of-17 shots, including four 3-pointers. He added five rebounds. First-year
Jordan Owusu added 18 points, including three triples, while
Tomiwa Adetosoye had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
Chicago's Shane Regan secured a triple-double, the first in team history, with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the Maroons. Eamonn Kenah was the Chicago leading scorer with 16 points, while Daniel Cochran added 13 points, 9 boards and 2 blocks.
Noah Pit and Phillip Lawrence had 13 points and 12 points, respectively, off the bench for UChicago and Nick Roper chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.
URochester started out hot from distance, sinking three straight 3-pointers over its first three possession, sprinting out to a 9-0 advantage.
The Maroons quickly trimmed the lead back to two, following a Joe Berry free throw and two treys from Cochran, before
Justin Odibo sank two free throws to make the score 11-7 URochester after three and a half minutes.
UR maintained a slim lead for the next few minutes until Lawrence drained two 3-pointers in a row on back-to-back possessions to pull the top-ranked Maroons in front 18-16. Two more three's, this time by Kenah, extended the Chicago margin to seven with under eight minutes left in the half.
A 7-0 spurt featuring another Kenah 3-pointer saw the Maroons lead reach ten, before the Yellowjackets closed the half strong, eventually trimming the lead down to just two points following Oprea's tip-in as the first half buzzer sounded.
To start the second half, Owusu hit a 3-pointer and Odibo sank a jumper for five straight 'Jacket points to give the Yellowjackets 51-48 advantage after two minutes.
UChicago scored the next 12 points over a 2:11 span, regaining a 9-point lead following Berry's old-fashioned 3-point play.
The Maroons kept Rochester at arm's length over the next several minutes, with the lead reaching a game-high 12 points following a Lawrence layup with 11:23 on the clock.
URochester continued to battle back, cutting the deficit to six at the 8-minute mark following an 8-2 run. Adetosoye scored all eight points for the 'Jackets in the rush, using his dribble drive to penetrate the lane and slash to the hoop.
After the Adetosoye spurt, Chicago's Pit and Kenah scored layups to extend the lead to ten and the Maroons were able to hold Rochester at bay, keeping the margin above six the rest of the contest.
Both teams ended up shooting around 47% in the game, with UChicago sinking ten 3-pointers to URochester's eight. On the glass, the Maroons outrebounded the Yellowjackets 46 to 28.
Up next, the Yellowjackets host another nationally-ranked foe, as #20 Washington University in St. Louis comes to the Palestra on Sunday at 2 pm.
