‘Jackets Move to 7-2 on Florida Trip with Dickinson Split

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The University of Rochester baseball team is winding down its spring break trip in Florida and ended up splitting a doubleheader versus Dickinson College on Thursday at the RussMatt Invitational at the Chain of Lakes Sports Complex.

URochester took the opener 9-6, while the Red Devils answered with a victory in game two, winning 8-3. The split sees UR move to 7-2 overall on the season, while Dickinson sits at 8-5 at this point in 2026.

Game 1: Rochester 9, Dickinson 6
Eight of nine batters in the Yellowjacket lineup recorded hits and runs scored as the Yellowjackets took the opener, using two big innings, putting up four runs in both the third and fifth.

Sammy Besztery led the offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, adding a double, two RBI and run scored. Logan Mathias ended with two hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Teddy Monahan recorded two hits, including a double, run and RBI. First-year Carlos Barajas also provided three RBI.

On the mound, Sunil Lindsay picked up the win, tossing five-plus frames, yielding 6 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 4 walks with 3 strikeouts. He moves to 2-0 on the season. Ryan Arora got 1.1 innings of relief in before Jake Del Vecchio earned the last two outs, picking up his second save of the season.

Both teams started out slow offensively, recording just two hits through the first two innings combined.

In the third, Dickinson got on the board when Johnny Bruno doubled to right center, clearing the bases of runners, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Red Devils.

URochester answered right away though, putting up a four spot in the bottom half of the inning. After a pop out to start the inning, Owen Andreatta ripped a double off the fence in left. Barajas walked and Will Webster loaded the bases with a bunt single.

Besztery followed with a 2-run single to right, with Jake Bentivenga grounding out to tie the score. Monahan then competed the scoring in the frame, doubling down the left field line to score Besztery and make the score 4-3.

Lindsay put up a zero in the Dickinson half of the fourth, stranding two runners on base with a big strikeout of Will Ferris.

The Yellowjackets tacked on another run in the fourth on a Barajas sacrifice fly, scoring Tristan Datta who had a ground-rule double to left.

Up 5-3, UR tacked on four more runs in the fifth to boost its lead to six, with all the scores coming with two outs. Mathias had a 2-run single to right, while Barajas laced a single to center, also plating two base runners.

Dickinson clawed back with two runs in the sixth, one of which was unearned thanks to a Yellowjackets fielding error. Kyle Bailey had an RBI triple, while Shawn Arneja had an RBI groundout.

During the seventh and final inning, the first three batters reached against Arora via single, walk and hit by pitch, bringing the tying run to the plate.

A fielder's choice got a key out, but plated a run, keeping the tying run up to bat. Del Vecchio came in for the final two outs and got them easily, getting a pop out and fielder's choice ground out.

Game 2: Dickinson 8, Rochester 3
The Red Devils picked up the game two win, scoring eight runs on eight hits, also capitalizing on four walks and five hit batters from a trio of Yellowjacket pitchers. Meanwhile, Charlie Bien finished with a complete game on the mound for the Red Devils, allowing 7 hits, 3 runs (1 earned) and 0 walks, striking out 4.

Brendan Ryan got the start for the 'Jackets and pitched well in the first, going 1-2-3, including striking out a pair of batters.

In the top of the second, UR took the lead. Benjamin Garber led off with a single up the middle. Bentivenga reached after getting hit by a pitch and Monahan provided a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up ahead of a Randy Davis RBI ground out.

The next half inning, Bruno clubbed a home run to left to quickly tie the score. Later in the inning, Freeman hunt singled up the middle, driving in two runs to put Dickinson up 3-1.

URochester answered back with two runs in the next half inning through, with George Farley IV and Luke Blozy scoring on a missed pop up by the Dickinson infield.

Double plays highlighted the defensive efforts in the Dickinson third inning and Rochester fourth before the Red Devils scraped two more runs across in their half of the fourth inning.

Later on, Dickinson completed its scoring in the sixth on three hits, a URochester error, walk and hit batter. Another double play by the 'Jacket defense limited the damage and ended the inning.

URochester got a 1-out double from Blozy in the seventh inning, but couldn't muster any more offense, eventually snapping its four-game win streak.

Blozy finished as the lone Yellowjacket with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and run scored.

Ryan ended up taking the loss in four innings, surrendering 5 hits, 5 runs (3 earned), and 1 walk while striking out 2. Kevin Carprenter-Holmes and Christopher Trucano each tossed an inning in relief.

The Yellowjackets conclude their Florida swing of games on Friday morning against Washington & Jefferson. First pitch is set for 9 am at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
