PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester baseball fell to the Keuka College Wolves, 9-6, on Wednesday evening at Towers Field, rallying with six runs over the third through eighth innings, but falling just short in another midweek matchup.
The Wolves would take the lead quickly against Rochester, chasing
Brendan Ryan after just five batters, as the 'Jackets' starter walked four of the first five batters he faced. Keuka would go on to score five runs on just two hits in the frame, with Derek Novicki's bases-loaded, two-run single giving the Wolves the lead, while Dan Mrowinski's RBI groundout capped off the five-run frame.
Spencer Guido, who relieved Ryan, would settle things down after the Wolves' five-run first, stranding the bases loaded in the top of the second, and keeping the Keuka off the scoreboard with a strikeout of Zach Elinich with two on in the third.
The Yellowjackets then got one back on
Sammy Besztery's RBI single in the bottom of the third, the first of six runs they scored, one each over the next six frames.
Sunil Lindsay then pitched a pair of scoreless innings, while Rochester tacked on two more, on
George Farley IV's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, and
Carlos Barajas' sacrifice fly in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth inning, though, Keuka would answer back, loading the bases on two walks and a bunt single against
Ryan Balent. Balent got Evan Cuba to fly out to right, scoring Elinich to make it a 6-3 ballgame, but Mike Dutch then blasted a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Wolves an 9-3 advantage.
Besztery would bring home another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, cutting Keuka's lead to 8-4, while
Declan Jack's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh pulled URochester within three.
Rochester would then add another in the bottom of the eighth, pulling within two on
Benjamin Garber's RBI groundout. But Keuka would answer back with a run in the top of the ninth, before Brandon Wilson closed things out in the bottom of the inning, earning the save to solidify the 9-6 victory.
With the win, Keuka moves to 4-9 on the year, while the Yellowjackets drop to 8-7 with the loss.
Lucas Gilbert (1-2) earned the win for Keuka, allowing one run on one hit, walking three and striking out three over 2.1 innings pitched. Wilson (1) picked up the save, allowing one run on two hits over two innings pitched.
Ryan (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on one hit, walking four of the five batters he faced.
At the plate, Besztery went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while
Jake Goldberg went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
URochester will open another Liberty League series on Friday, March 27 with a matchup against Hobart College at 3:00 p.m. at Towers Field.
