Statesmen Slug Past Yellowjackets in Series Finale

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Fueled by four home runs, all coming in three consecutive innings, visiting Hobart College earned a Liberty League series sweep over the University of Rochester baseball team by virtue of an 11-5 win on Monday evening at Towers Field.

Hobart (17-6, 5-0 Liberty League) picked up its second straight 11-5 victory over the Yellowjackets (8-10, 1-5 Liberty League), and ended up outscoring URochester over the three-game set by a 35 to 16 margin.

The Statesmen ended up scoring runs in seven of the nine innings played and got a terrific relief pitching appearance from Joe Dunham, leading to the win, Hobart's 11th in its last 12 games.

URochester sophomore outfielder Benjamin Garber led the home team with a four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Sammy Besztery ripped a pair of doubles and finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run.

Hobart's top five batters in the lineup combined to have 13 of the teams 15 hits on the night. Jack O'Neil went 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs. Will Jones also was 4-for-4, hit a home run, had three RBI and scored a run. Sean Garvin and Connor O'Neil each went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, as well.

In the first inning, Hobart got on top first, scoring twice. Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to center, while Garvin made it 2-0 after scampering home on a wild pitch by URochester starter Andrew Lenhard.

Rochester responded in a big way in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs to take the early lead.

George Farley IV and Garber led off with back-to-back singles before Jake Bentivenga singled to right, driving in Farley.

Besztery followed with an RBI double before Luke Blozy walked and Jake Goldberg added an RBI, also drawing a walk with the bases loaded. Two batters later, Teddy Monahan legged out a fielders choice and was credited with an RBI, making the score 4-2 UR.

J. O'Neil singled with two outs in the second inning to cut into the Yellowjackets lead.

The score remained 4-3 URochester until the bottom of the fourth when Besztery found the gap in left center for his second double of the game, plating Farley, extending the lead back to two runs, up 5-3.

Hobart's home run party started in the top of the fifth when C. O'Neil clubbed a solo shot, just over the outstretched glove of Garber in left field.

In the URochester half of the fifth, Dunham took over on the mound an immediately looked strong, striking out two batters in a 1-2-3 inning.

The momentum stayed on Hobart's side in the sixth, with the Statesmen also benefitting from a URochester fielding error to score four unearned runs.

After the error started things off, two quick outs should have ended the inning, but instead the frame continued with a Christian Petry bunt single. J. O'Neil then crushed a 3-run home run to left center, giving the Statesmen a 7-5 lead.

Two pitches later, Garvin smashed a solo home run over the fence in center field to make in a three-run ballgame.

In the next inning, Jones led off with Hobart's fourth round-tripper of the night, clearing the left field fence once again.

Meanwhile, Dunham kept rolling along, eventually setting down 11 straight Yellowjacket hitters during his outing. That streak came to an end when Monahan tripled down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth.

Garvin added an RBI single for the Statesmen in the Hobart half of the eighth and Jones singled in a run during the ninth to complete the scoring on the evening.

Hobart's Max Friedlander pitched around a 1-out single by Garber in the ninth to close out the victory for the visitors.

Overall, Dunham picked up the win, going four innings while surrendering just one hit and no walks. He struck out five. Cole Tarrant tossed 1.1 innings to start for Hobart and surrendered five hits and four runs. Charlie Forrest followed and allowed one run in his 2.2 innings of work striking out three.

It was three's wild in Lenhard's start for URochester, as the sophomore lefty went 3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks while striking out 3.

Sunil Lindsay relieved and was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs, only one of which was earned in his three innings. Spencer Guido struck out three in 2.2 innings, while Sam Loeb got the final out on the mound for the 'Jackets.

Rochester is right back in action on Tuesday afternoon, playing on the road at SUNY Cortland.
