University of Rochester softball swept its second-straight doubleheader and made it five wins in a row with a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Geneseo on Monday afternoon at Southside Field. The 'Jackets run-ruled the Knights in both games, shutting out Geneseo in game one en route to an 8-0 victory in five innings, before taking game two in walk-off fashion with a 10-2 run-rule-shortened, five-inning victory.
Â
With the sweep, URochester moves to 11-5 on the year, while the Knights fall to 9-6 on the 2026 campaign.
Â
Game 1: Rochester 8, Geneseo 0 (5 inn.)
The Yellowjackets cruised to victory in game one, needing just 75 minutes to dispatch the Knights 8-0, led by
Molly Broccolo's two-hit shutout in the circle.
Â
Broccolo picked up her fourth win of the 2026 campaign and 52nd of her career, moving into solo third place all-time in URochester team history. The senior finished with just two hits allowed in her first shutout of the season, walking three while striking out six.
Â
Three of Broccolo's six strikeouts came in the first inning, as the right-hander fanned the first three Knights of the game, all via swinging strike.
Â
The momentum carried into the bottom of the first, where the Yellowjackets raced out to an early 4-0 lead.
Ally Kim led off with a single and stole second before
Riley Laygo, the newly minted Liberty League Performer of the Week, clubbed a 2-run home run to right-center field.
Â
Rowan Mulholland walked, and
Marie Kinchington singled to keep things rolling before the first out was recorded.
Jensen Sminchak then doubled down the right field line to score Mulholland, and later in the inning, a wild pitch scored Sminchak.
Â
In the second, URochester scored three more runs, building its lead to 7-0. Kim opened the inning by reaching on an error and stole second before reaching third on a wild pitch. Laygo followed by ripping a single up the middle for a 5-0 advantage.
Â
After stealing second, Laygo later came around to score on
Julianna Lyons' double off the base of the fence in center field. Sminchak followed by hitting a hard grounder just inside the first base bag, plating Lyons.
Â
Broccolo pitched around a single and a fielder's choice error in the third, keeping the shutout intact by stranding two Knights on base.
Â
UR scored for the third straight inning in the bottom of the frame, with Laygo picking up another RBI, this time with two outs. She singled up the middle to score pinch-runner
Maithili Shah, who entered the game for
Ilana Weiss, who drew a walk to lead off the inning.
Â
The Yellowjackets were again able to strand Geneseo baserunners on in both the fourth and fifth innings, leading to the mercy-rule shortened victory in the opener.
Â
Laygo finished 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBI to lead the offense. Sminchak had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Kim scored twice and had two stolen bases.
Â
Game 2: Rochester 10, Geneseo 2 (5 inn.)
The Yellowjackets would get on the scoreboard first, the same way they did in game one, with a two-run blast giving Rochester the lead. After
Maddie White worked a scoreless top of the first, Mulholland followed Laygo's one-out triple with a two-run shot to left center, giving the 'Jackets a 2-0 lead.
Â
URochester then made it 4-0 in the bottom of the second, with back-to-back RBI doubles from
Savanna Hernandez and Kim doubling the 'Jackets' lead. Hernandez's double scored
Katelyn Wade after the junior walked and stole second, while Kim's double brought Hernandez home to give Rochester a 4-0 lead.
Â
SUNY Geneseo would answer back in the top of the fourth, pushing two runs across to cut Rochester's lead in half. Back-to-back singles by Lauren Babich and Gabriella Smith brought Lauren Bieniek to the plate with runners at the corners, and though the 'Jackets caught Smith trying to steal second, Babich scored from third on the play.
Â
Then, after Bieniek walked and stole second, Gabriella Petroski helped herself out in the circle with an RBI single to center, scoring Jane Rielly, who pinch-ran for Bieniek. But White struck out Claire Kubiak to keep Geneseo from getting any closer, and the Yellowjacket bats would break out again in the fifth.
Â
White settled back in, in the top of the fifth, stranding a two-out single to bring URochester back up to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Kim led off and got things started with a single through the right side, stole second and took third on a throwing error by the Knights' catcher.
Â
Laygo followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2, and after Mulholland reached on a fielder's choice and Laygo was safe at second on another throwing error, Kinchington blasted Petroski's first pitch over the left-field fence for a three-run home run, doubling the Yellowjackets' advantage.
Â
Lyons kept the inning going with a walk and was pinch-run for by
Maithili Shah, and after Sminchak doubled to put the game-winning run in scoring position, the Knights made a pitching change, once again bringing in Amanda Audia out of the bullpen.
Â
Just three pitches later, though, Wade finished off the run-rule victory with a walk-off single to right, scoring both Shah and Sminchak to give the Yellowjackets a 10-2 victory.
Â
White (5-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out two over 5.0 innings pitched. Petroski (5-2) took the loss for Geneseo, allowing 10 runs, nine of which were earned, on nine hits, walking two and striking out three over 4.0 innings pitched.
Â
Six different Yellowjackets tallied extra-base hits, led by Laygo again, who went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI, while Kinchington went 1-for-3 with a home run, run scored and three RBI.
Â
Mulholland also scored two and drove in a pair, going 1-for-3 with a home run, while Hernandez, Kim and Sminchak each added a double.
Â
Rochester will look to keep rolling as it heads to Cortland, NY, for its final tune-up before opening conference play, facing SUNY Cortland on Wednesday, April 1, with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
