BROCKPORT, NY – The University of Rochester women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles, 9-8, in overtime on Wednesday evening at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
After allowing just one goal the entire second half, the Yellowjackets and Golden Eagles headed to overtime after
Rose Bunting leveled the score at 8-8 with just seconds remaining off
Allison Weiden's assist in the fourth.
However, after an early save by
Isla Ablin and turnovers by both sides in overtime, SUNY Brockport would eke out the victory on Karaline McCarthy's player-up goal with just over a minute remaining in the overtime period, giving Brockport a 9-8 victory.
The Yellowjackets trailed 7-4 at the halftime break, but kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard for nearly 29 minutes, holding SUNY Brockport without a goal the entire third period and much of the fourth.
Rochester was only able to cut into Brockport's lead once in the third, though, on
Anna Rogers' unassisted score less than a minute into the quarter, before both sides went quiet the rest of the period.
In the fourth, Rogers got the Yellowjackets back on the scoreboard and back within one, notching an unassisted tally just shy of the 10-and-a-half-minute mark of the quarter. Rogers' third score of the afternoon made it a one-goal game, 7-6, and just over a minute later,
Sam Kinch would even the score off Weiden's assist to tie the score at 7-all.
The score would remain tied till the 2:13 mark of the fourth, when Karaline McCarthy broke through for the third time for the Golden Eagles, putting Brockport back in front with a little over two minutes to play.
And after Caitlin Mulvihill won the ensuing draw control for Brockport, the Golden Eagles had an opportunity to run some clock, but Tristan Davis' turnover, caused by
Madison Rieder, gave URochester the ball with 40 seconds left and a chance to tie.
After moving into their offensive zone, shots by
Alyssa Gorny and Bunting went wide, but Bunting would get another try and beat the buzzer, sending the 'Jackets and Golden Eagles to OT, tied at eight.
Amanda Evans got the scoring started in the first quarter, as Evans and Gorny traded scores, before two-straight from Karaline McCarthy gave Brockport a 3-1 lead.
Sara Mendelson would find the back of the net with 2:35 left in the first off another Wieden assist, one of four on the afternoon for the sophomore, to cut Brockport's lead to 3-2 after one.
And after Brockport again went up two goals on Davis' tally to start the third, two-straight scores from Rogers and Gorny leveled the score at 4-all, but the Golden Eagles would score three unanswered before the halftime break to take a 7-4 lead into the locker room.
With the loss, Rochester drops to 2-1 on the year, while the Golden Eagles move to 1-2 with the win.
Rogers led Rochester offensively with three scores, while Gorny tallied two. Weiden had a game-high four assists, while Gorny also led URochester with four draw controls.
Defensively,
Talia Feldman and
Jenna Ufberg each picked up three groundballs, while Gorny and Ufberg both forced a pair of turnovers. In goal, Ablin made nine saves.
Rochester next heads to Stevenson, MD, for a non-conference matchup against Stevenson University on Wednesday, March 11 at 4:00 p.m.
