Milestones Aplenty in URochester’s 13-11 Win at Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY – Senior Alyssa Gorny became Rochester's all-time leader with 200 goals, and junior Anna Rogers hit the 100-goal mark with a career-high eight goals as the University of Rochester women's lacrosse defeated the Clarkson University Golden Knights, 13-11, on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

With the win, the 'Jackets' second straight and sixth in their last eight games, Rochester moves to 8-4 (5-2 LL) and remains in third place in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights fall to 8-5 (3-4 LL).

In the win, Gorny became Rochester's all-time leader in career goals, scoring her 200th goal with 18 seconds left in the third quarter to move into the top spot, surpassing Anni McDonough `98, who scored 199 goals from 1995-98. Gorny is now URochester's all-time leader in both points and goals, with 260 career points (200g, 60a) and 200 career goals.

Junior Anna Rogers also reached a milestone, scoring her 100th career goal with her final tally, one of a career-high eight goals, with 1:47 left in the fourth, becoming just the 12th player in program history to reach 100 career goals.

Jenna Kessler got the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard first, just shy of three minutes into the first, as Rochester scored four of the first five goals to open an early lead. Kessler's goal, assisted by Sam Kinch, with 12:04 left in the first, gave Rochester a 1-0 lead, while Kinch's goal from Allison Weiden made it 2-0 less than a minute later.

Brooklynne Perrigo answered back for the Golden Knights with 9:07 left in the opening stanza, before goals from Gorny and Rogers made it a 4-1 lead a little over halfway through the first.

However, Clarkson would score twice before the first-quarter buzzer, cutting URochester's lead to just one, 4-3, on Grabby Cranfield's unassisted score with 1:24 left in the period, and then outscored UR, 4-3, in the second to level the score at 7-7 heading into the halftime break.

Rogers got the scoring started in the second on an assist from Lorelei King, before three-straight goals from Clarkson, including two with a player-advantage, gave the Golden Knights their first lead of the day, 6-5, with 6:39 remaining in the first half.

However, Rodgers answered back for the 'Jackets, scoring twice off assists from Weiden and Rose Bunting over the next four minutes, before Isabella Koproski sent the two sides into the locker room all square at seven.

Rogers quickly gave Rochester the lead to start the third, before Karli Scherpf ended a near-10-minute scoreless stretch for both sides, knotting the score at eight-all with an unassisted tally with 4:36 left in the third.

However, the Yellowjackets would dominate the rest of the period, scoring three goals in the final 3:43 of the third, two from Gorny and another from Rogers to take a 12-8 lead into the fourth.

Rogers would then score again just 50 seconds into the final frame, extending Rochester's lead to 12-8 with a little more than 14 minutes remaining. And after Sydney Nakas pulled the Golden Knights within three just over a minute-and-a-half later, Rochester would lock down on defense, again holding Clarkson without a score for more than 10 minutes.

Rogers broke the scoreless stretch and again found the back of the net with 1:47 left, solidifying Rochester's 13-9 lead with her 100th career goal. And while Nakas and Lauren McCorry pulled the Golden Knights within two late, the Yellowjackets kept Clarkson off the scoreboard over the final 17 seconds to secure the 13-11 victory.

Rogers led Rochester offensively with a game-high eight goals, while Gorny added three goals and two assists. Gorny and Sara Mendelson also each had a team-high six draw controls, while Maddie Bunting had a team-high four ground balls.

Defensively, Morgan Napolitano and Jenna Ufberg each forced a pair of turnovers, while Isla Ablin made a season-high 18 saves.

The Yellowjackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 14, when they wrap up non-conference play with a matchup against Utica University in Utica, NY, at 4:00 p.m.
